I read that recently on a thread somewhere here...

I beg to differ... albeit it may take 1000 to clean your glass... I believe this is a particularly big bladder snail munching away on the side glass

People tend to think they don't eat plants. They will eat algae, plants, fish food or anything organic (sick or dead fish, shrimp, each other if one dies). They are like people and eat anything.
 
I think of them as Pac Man with leftovers. They some algae, some biofilm, plants, poop, everything. But they don't do it so the glass is clear, and they don't improve the look of the tank.
