I bought an Eheim canister filter to see if it will help clear my tank water as I am having issues that I explained on another thread. Anyway the instructions are not too clear and I don't know exactly which order to put this stuff in the canister. I have
1. Thick course blue spongy thing
2. White pad looks very similar to filter floss
3. Carbon pad
4. Ceramic rings
5. Round bead type things

Could someone tell me please starting with the bottom layer and working up which way to do this, thanks

which filter, the picture on the box should show it apart, if not look on the eheim website

There isn't realy a definate way to do it. but something like this.

Thick coarse sponge at the bottom.

Carbon Pads

Ceramic rings

I dont understand what " round bead type rings" Are (Do u have a picture)
And filter floss at the top :good:
Edit--- sorry, just seen now that Eheims are the other way around :good:

the sponge goes at the top on ehiems, its part of the pre filter :)

which model is it? some of them have the coase prefilter at the top, in a separate tray with a gate/valve in the middle, then the big media baskets underneath. The beads sound like eheim mech, which is mechanical filter media.

In my pro3, which it sounds like you might have, I have the blue coarse sponge in the prefilter tray at the top, then mech at the bottom, then the two middle trays full of ceramic media, with a white floss pad right at the top (but under the prefilter tray). I'd leave out the carbon pad for now and hold on to it until you need to get medication out of the water.

if it hasnt got a prefilter, put the beads right at the bottom, then the blue sponge. The beads are meant to distribute the flow of water evenly around the bio media.

Choose the model on the website and they have cut through diagrams.

For a classic I've got the ceramic tubes > blue sponge > substrat pro (beads) > then another sponge

Thanks everyone, I got it up and running. I wish it were slightly quieter as the canister is only about 4-5 ft. from my head while I sleep. But I will adjust. The flow from the output is amazing. My plant leaves on the far end of the tank (48") are getting movement and that has never happened before. Glowlights seem to be enjoying the water movement and are staying right by the output at the moment. Really hope this solves my water clarity issues, will let you know.

my experience with eheims (all second hand) tells me they are a little noisy when forst set up until all the air is out (first few hours - give the cannister a little sake to 'burp' it). Any noise after that is either the impeller not sitting right or the media crashing about inside (both easily fixable by either making sure the impeller is in its rubber housings or a little bit of sponge on top of media).

When they have settled down I have to look at the flow to check they are running.
