Ive been thinking about a critter thats different than fish for my fish tank and ive narrowed it down to the following:
Japanese fire bellied newt
African dwarf frog

Oriental firebellied toad

Which do people think would be better? Im wanting near on 100% aquatic
I will have filter and heater but im thinking about ease of keeping and feeding etc.

Also if anyone has any good info :hyper: greatly recieved :good:

hey! I remember your post from a few days ago! I still highly recommend the African Dwarf Frog...as for ease of care - my nine year old sister and my boyfriend's eight year old niece each have their own ADF tanks....and they care for it completely by themselves!!!

A gallon of water per frog is important to remember....Once a week water change, low setting filter so you don't create too much water flow, some plants and hiding places, a cube of frozen blood worms on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and voila!!! Happy and Healthy Frogs!!!

Feeding them every other/every three days is ideal because these frogs will gorge themselves if you let them....they love food and will over eat if they can!

You can also keep small species of catfish with them to help clean up the left over food...and they have never harmed either my pepper catfish nor my ghost shrimp (the shrimp I originally bought as feeder shrimp but the frogs never ate them lol!)

hope you try these little guys...you will not be disappointed!

Lol yeah i did lol
i went into store today and the guy said one will cost about £5/6 is that average? (the computer wasn't working so he didnt know for sure)

Well I live in the states so the currency is a bit difference but here they are about $3-4....so they are fairly cheap! I would suggest getting atleast 3...they do best in groups....

if you have any question about the little guys let me know! you can email me directly at jmgregson87@gmail.com

I have white cloud mountain minnows and emerald eye rasboras(very small) in the tank im wanting to put something extra in would they be ok with a ADF?
Also lava rock? i have a huge piece with small "depressions" in would it be ok?

Just been onto a coversion site BLIMEY thats cheap!!!! lol i might see if he'd do me a deal when i go back in on thurs next week (29th) :shout:

Just fine!!! Before I got a species-only tank I housed mine with Neon Tetras and Ruby Zebras - Not one got gobbled up!!!
As for the lava rock - hold it in your hand and run your finger tips over it...then squeeze it all over with your palm - take a filer and file down and sharp/rough points and it will be just fine for the little guys!!

So file off sharp bits by running finger tips and palm over and filing them off?

Yea...you are using your finger tips (our fingertips are highly sensitive to textures!) and your palms (the skin is thin here and sensitive) to find any places that you need to file. if your finger tips and palms find an area annoying...so will the tummy of your frog!

yay!!! I started having these little guys years ago and I can now not even imagine NOT having them!! My sister has been taking care of her own tank since she was 6 and my bf's niece has since she was 7 - if they can do it you definitely can!!! It just proves how easy they are :)

Mine are 3 for £9 at my LFS. If they are £5-6 I'd order them online.

 go for newts or the firebellied toad.

I've never checked out the prices of ADF but if I see any before you buy some I'll tell you how much I saw them for. I would have thought they'd be quite inexpensive.

I really need something totally aquatic as i have some guppies in that tank.
So firebellied toad is out im afraid i do love the look of them tho, might get some in a yr or two if i move out cos i only have limited space atm.

Chinese fire belly newts are fully aquatic, but should not be kept at tropical temperatures. Japanese firebelly newts are much more terrestrial. ie they need land. same goes for the Firebelly toad. African clawed frogs are predatory but aquatic.

I would go for some ADF's! though they can be picky eaters. mine do fine in a community.

Ok thanx, im not getting African clawed frogs i said African dwarf frogs lol
