3x times is turnover is minimum id be get it to 4x at least. Filteration is the most important component to a tank and the fish so shouldnt be 'cheaped' out on

i agree the 2217 is only 670l per hour turn over . . . thats less than 2 x tank volume

Eheim generally uses a lower flow rate, but is absolutelly capable of filtering that tank. There is no match for the build quality of eheim, and the biological filtration is spot on even at lower turnovers. As long as you are keeping up with your regular WC ad tank cleannongs' you will be just fine.
Of course you could always go with a larger eheim if you wanted more turnover. But tetratec filters are just garbage. If you want something that's going to leak all over your house, definitely get a tetratec.

Another good filtter to look into would be a Rena XP3. There priced fairly and offer good filtration. However you will get an overall better product from eheim.

yeah i think im going for the eheim 2217 its the same price as the 405 but it filters 160g compaired to the 405 which filters up to 100g theres no competition really it has to be the eheim
cheers guys :good:

eheim 2217 is seriously under filtering your tank. Your tank is say 340-350 litres? You would need 2 eheim 2217. I have a 240 litre tank an im using 2 x tetratec ex1200 and they are great.

You need atleast 4 times your tank size filtration per hour. So you'd be look at something with atleast 1400lph turnover. What are you keeping in the tank?

6 black widdow tetra and 4 apisto the 2217 is way big enough

Well there's a debate.. l have 3 eheims at the mo and they all run silent. My last new one was a 2075 pro 3 its a monster and cleaning them all out is so easy that my 16 yr old son does it. The parts are easy to pick up but the media is expensive and the lfs recomend changing the stuff once a year. The wet n dry works very slow but it does a good job. if you check out Charterhouse Aquatics they are doing them really cheap and post is free.

For god sake, what has this guys filtration got to do with the original post?!
best to get all the info so i can buy the right filter make sure i get 1 big enough so i dont have to run 2
the interesting thing is aqadvisor says the 2217 is way big enough but these guys say otherwise now im confused is aqadvisor just a load of crap then

Maybe I should alter the original question since this has turned into a bit of a debate.

to:

"Best external filter which will do at Least 1200L per hour for under £100"?

Over this amount is out of the question at the moment, so whilst I know I can get a great filter for £250, that doesn't really help me. Its kinda like saying "Buy a Ferrari" when I am looking for a family saloon ;)

In answering the above, I had narrowed it down to the two in my original post, but would be open to other suggestions that fit the bill.....

aparantly neither of those filters do 1200ltr per hour according to these guys so im back where i started now its the fx5 or the eheim 2080 pro 2 ferrari's lol

so i decided im buying the fx5 cant afford £300 for the eheim £150 for the fx5 has got to be worth it

FLOW RATE
Manufactuers rate their filters by the maximum produced by the pump under ideal conditions without media and things like hoses which isn'tvery helpful in the real world. Most cannisters seem to get less then 50% of their rated flow capacity when used in the real world but both these filters did better then that.
The Fluval showed a flowrate of 1991 litres per hour when full of media and connected which is about 57% of its rated pump capacity of 3500 l/ph but the Eheim did even better giving 1207 litres per hour out of its possible 1700 l/ph for a amazing 71% !
This still gives the Fluval a nearly 800 litres per hour flowrate advantage when used in real life situations but filtration is more then flow alone its also about capacity.

The EX1200 is 1200L per hour - Hence the name EX1200 ;)

yes but thats with no media or pipe work so its going to be more like 600ltr p/h when its actually running

Right.....So that means really I need to be looking at an FX5 too then it would seem.

i was reading up on a few articles today as several people on here said the filters i was looking at wouldnt be big enough and it turns out that all the ratings put on filters by the makers are only done by testing the pump with no media or pipe work thank god for this site and its members i would of ended up spending £100 on something no where near big enough
im going for the fx5 its the best value £155 brand new on ebay
