Having just had to have mylarge 10" plus sailfin rehomed I need to fill the void in my tank with a couple of smaller more catching plecs. Any recommendations? I originally thought bout the gold nugget l081. It stays smaller but from what I've researched its quite nocturnal and often gets missold as the larger gn's. I really like the zebra ones like the l046 but they are. far too expensive imo. So any suggestions. Aslong as they aren't silly money.

i know there are some similar (well as similar as can be) to the L46 without the £££

i have been looking at L052 and L168 which are quite similar to L46's :good:

Tank size?
If you're in the UK, PFK recently had an article all on this.
New plec species to the fray, each with prices etc.
Some are slightly older, like the flash plec and the magnum, but might still give you some ideas.

My mustard spot panaques (LDA031 Panaque albomaculatus) are lovely and active during the day, spending much time at the front of the tank and showing off their beautiful lyre fins (in a heavily planted tank, but did not see them for months at a time in a rocky, low-plant tank). I paid £5 for mine wholesale, so they should be around £10-15 retail.

tank size ain't a problem as its 500 litre, only rehomed the sailfin as he.was getting aggressive towards a few other tankmates. Could u tell me which pfk issue it was as I can back order it for reference if it ain't on their website.

Any other suggestions?

Just taken a look through mine.
It's this months, Page 18 to 22.
A few nice pictures, complete with average prices and limited info about each plec.

i picked up a juvi rusty plec for a tenner. i think they're very underrated. apparantly there are 2 types very close in appearance, but one gets larger than the other. with your tank i wouldnt worry about it. i think the larger one would eventually be similar size to the plec you just moved when its fully grown, so if you're happy your tank can take a plec that big, it might be an option.

i think the best way to get nice L numbers cheapish is buying small. i mentioned in another thread i almost brought a baby royal panaque a little while ago for 22 quid, about 2 inches if that. a 3-4 inch fish is nearly 50 quid at one of my LFS. i did get a baby flash plec, was 23 quid and again should be similar price to the panaque. i used to have a flounder plec (l168 i think) that was nice but he died after about a month, he was just under 20 quid and about 5 inches. one of my lfs has something called a thresher plec which is 25 quid, sand coloured with brownish spots, very ncie fish. also how about a royal whiptail ? again about 20-25 quid at my lfs, my mate has some perfect full grown ones and they are stunning.

also there is a thread at the top of this section specifically naming plecs that are 8" and under :hey:

there's a link at the top of this forum that may be very useful for you....
