There isn't an 'amount' it should be. It should just be present.

Those paper strip test kits are really innacurate.
Also you really need an ammonia test kit, just so you can test for everything.

I would recommend API Liquid Based test kit.
You can get them on Ebay for around £18 and they last for upwards of a year.

You can get them from any/most fish and pets shops. It's just they're alot cheaper to buy from ebay.

You can get them at pets at home for around £24 I think.
