Looking for some suggestions here as to plants and fish suitable for my new tank. I have just got a Jewel Lido 120 litre (61, 41, 58).

Before I had a little 13 gal tank for about 10 years, though i now realise that was sucessful rather on luck than hard work and knowledge as I seem to have combined fish that usually dont get on and Ive never carried out a nitrate or ph test. Now Im reading up on all these things and I think my new fish will be quite safe, but I have no idea what to get.

I quit fancy some angelfish, but I dont know what to put with then as they can be a bit nippy and be nipped by lots of things in return. Also is my tank big enough for Angels? its quite tall which I know they prefer. I did want a nice group of cardinals or something similar, but I hear they will just be a nice snack and be picked off one by one.

Also I am hoping to get some plants establihed in the next two weeks before I start adding fish, as I dont drive could anyone recommend a good online store for plants?

Thanks

R

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Do you still have the original tank? If so it could help in cycling the new tank, however if you dont, we here would recommend a fishless cycle, please take a look around these pinned topics, on cycling fishless, with fish and also a species index which gives you info on types of fish, compatibility and suitable tank sizes before you make any decisions, any questions that follow, everyone here will be happy to answer them for you.

Hi there Rozamundo and welcome,

I was the same way, after reading here I realised how much of my former time in the hobby was just going along without really knowing the "why" answers behind what I was observing. This forum has given me a really nice new feeling of confidence about a number of things in fishkeeping that I never had before.

A 120L with at least 17 inches of so of height should be an ideal venue for a pair of angels as centerpiece fish - a really nice thought to be planning for. Your observations about angels are good. A further thing I've learned here and observed to some extent is that it makes a difference when you introduce the different fish to each other. If you have a tank with a school of neons already established and later introduce some young angels, the will grow up thinking the neons are a normal part of their environment and there will be -less- chance they will eat them - no guarantee though. Introduce new neons to already established angels and you will probably see snack time within minutes.

minxfishy has given you one of my favorite links here for newcomers. Articles there by Miss Wiggle and Alien Anna are good to start with. Getting a very thorough knowledge of the nitrogen cycle and fishless cycling is fascinating and fun - it is the real heart of the feeling of confidence I was talking about above.

Hey there, thanks very much for the tips re the angels, that sounds like a plan.
Re Minxyfish comment about the other tank, I took about 1/3 of the water from my old tank and put it in the new one, it wasnt exactly crystal clear but Im sure that all helps. I set the new tank up on sunday and it currently has about 5 small plants in and Ive just ordered a bit of a selection that should be in there by thursday. Im going to sift through those articles now from Miss Wiggle and Alien Anna.

Thanks for the advice! Im sure I'll need more!

Id replace the neons with cardinals, just that little bit bigger to help avoid the angels snacking on them.
