I have looked a the pinned topic which says....

recommended 12sq.cm of surface area to 1cm of fully grown fish

can anyone translate this into a per litre type figure.. i am looking at getting a 125 litre tank and so I am thinking about suitable (eventual) stocking levels. Any recommendations of some nice colourful fish would be great.. something suitable for a begginner. there seems to be tonnes of types of guppies and platies etc.. some more colourful than others.

Can anybody tell me what lives quite happily with a few barbs too i have inherited.. not sure which they are, i inheritited them.. i thought they were tiger barbs, but the seem smaller and a slightly different shape, but with similar stripes.

Cheers

Well use the 1inch per gallon, your tank is same volume as mine 125ltr/27uk gallon/32 us gallon. So its around 27 - 33inch of adult fish in total. Doesnt have to be EXACT but its a rough guide.

Thanks.....

anyone know what wil live happily with the barbs.. apart from other barbs ;-)

Do they look like this?

Those are pentazona barbs. Peaceful barbs, good for community settings. They can be kept with a wide variety of relatively peaceful fish. You should try to get their numbers up to at least 6 or so though, as they are schooling fish.

What other fish do you like?

Are there any other fish that will definitely be in the tank?

No others definately, apart from the brown sucky think with white spots.. (descriptive eh).. This fella seems a little slack on the alage sucking front.. i went round a friends house who had a smaller light coloured variety and this thing worked harder than a 24 hour dyson........... he said the LFS recommended it.. what are the best sucky algae things to buy, and are they ok with each other..

Bit of a novice, so any recommendations for a colourful tank.. and numbers would be great. (bearing in mind the peaceful parbs mentioned in the quote and that I am a beginner!)....

What about some Loaches?? Clowns are nice, but they grow quite large over a number of years, or you could consider some Yoyo Loaches, that dont grow half as big.... They need to be in groups of at least 4....

You can also get some colourful gouramis, (these are community fish, the same as the Loaches)

Platies, Guppis and Mollies are also nice, and colourful, but bear in mind if you mix sexes these are live bearers so you will have babies.....lol

I also love Cory's (have 3 myself bronze) you can get albino, and other varieties, and they have soooooooo much character, they are lovely to watch :)

Good Luck....

they sound a bit better.. i think this one is the British Builder of suckers.. too many tea breaks, not enough grafting.. lazy bugger.

Obviously you haven't met Boston construction workers. They'll see your tea break and raise you a two scotch lunch. :D

Otos are a fine choice for a mature tank that has algae problems.

Loaches are just cool. Angelicus, Queen, and Zebra loaches are among my favorites and would do will in a group in your tank.

For a centerpiece fish, I agree with Clariel on a pair of gouramis. I am particularly fond of pearls, but moonlights are beautiful too.

Excellent.. Gouramis are looking like a plan.. the loaches look good too..

so how many inches for gourami, otos and loaches do you allow.

would i be right in saying discus would not be a good beginner fish?

no i dont think discus are a great begginer fish, i think they need a lot of maintinence and care, there a very nice fish though but if you dont know what you are doing then you have lost a bit of money as they can be expensive lovely fish though.

would a betta live in community with gouramis, otos and loaches... and poss mollies or platies... i keep getting slightly mixed up views on which fish they can live with.. i just know to avoid other bettas and tetras!

Bettas and gourami together are (usually) not the best idea.

Honestly, a 125L tank with gourami, barbs, otos, and loaches is getting close to full assuming you get the barbs, otos and loaches in the numbers they need.

Let me give this a go...

2 pearl or moonlight gourami
6 pentazona barbs
4 otos
5 loaches (of the varieties I mentioned)
