would a betta live in community with gouramis, otos and loaches... and poss mollies or platies... i keep getting slightly mixed up views on which fish they can live with.. i just know to avoid other bettas and tetras!
Bettas and gourami together are (usually) not the best idea.

Honestly, a 125L tank with gourami, barbs, otos, and loaches is getting close to full assuming you get the barbs, otos and loaches in the numbers they need.

Let me give this a go...

2 pearl or moonlight gourami
6 pentazona barbs
4 otos
5 loaches (of the varieties I mentioned)

thanks for the above...

so.. 27 gallons = 27 inches = about 69cm

2 dwarf gourami would be 11cm (pearls even bigger)
6 barbs = 30 cm
4 otos = 16 cm
5 loaches = 30 cm

total= 87cm..

Have i done the calculations roughtly right. This would indicate that i would be overstocked. or are the estimations i got off of a website incorrect.

Sorry to be a pain about this, i just want to make sure im doing it right first time..

Erm, confusingly the inch-per-gallon guideline is based on US gallons, and imperial (UK) gallons are bigger.
I reckon that 125 litres would be 33 US gallon = 27 UK gallons (approx). So, 33" of fish.
33" = 83cm (approx) so you'd be fine with that selection IMO....

Oh.. good stuff.. However:

Made the mistake of taking the missus downt the LFS last night, and shes putting her own suggestions into place now.. She likes the bigger flashier ones.. so,,,

Persuased her that we are not ready for Discus.. beginner you see :D
but,,

she wants a couple of colourful dwarf gouramis & a couple of small angelfish.. The LFS told me that the angels should be ok if you buy the small young ones and add them last. This will make them less teritorial.

so...

Gouramis x 2 = 11cm
Angelfish x 2= 30 cm (eventually)
petazona barbs x 6 = 30 cm
otos x 4 = 16 cm

Total = 87 cm.

I did the fish check on Thinkfish and they seemed ok...

Would this be a happy little family then??? would the otos be enough, or would i need loaches..?

Cheers

I'm staying out of this. Let's just say I'm glad my gf doesn't have an interest in fishkeeping! ;)

lol...

i like them too.. just means less fish.. but bigger ones.. how quick do the angels grow?

my other half stands lost in the corner slowly trying to chew his own arm off whenever i go to an LFS with him (which is only when I absolutely can't avoid it). Now, I just buy him a paper to read in the car whilst he's waiting... far better all round....
I think angel fish grow pretty fast, depends on the conditions they're kept in though. When they're 50p sized they are very young so you can expect them to shoot up in size.
Don't get an otto though. Not for any technical reason, just coz they're ugly (annka5 prepares to duck the flying abuse and runs for cover at this point...)!

but cunning little workers i hear..

would you prefer loaches of some kind.? or do they not provide the same funtion?

nah, don't much like loaches either - I'd just go for a plastic algae scraper to clean the glass each week...
Seriously, if you like loaches or otto's then go for it -they'll be compatible in your tank set up.
I only don't like them becuase they're not pretty enough (to me) -purely a shallow and girly personal preferance thing.

Good good.. as i said in another post.. i ended up with a bigger tank than expected, so i have another 40cm or so of fish.. woo..

maybe the loaches as well then...!!!
