Which Filter?

I just upgraded to a 55 gallon tank yesterday. The guy I bought it from gave me two filters. They both are double filters. The only difference is one uses filter pads and the other has two wheels, pads and two other things filled with beads. The beads are half charcoal /half amo something. I am going to set up the tank today, which filter system should I use?

From what you've described one of them is a Marineland Bio-wheel. If that is what you have that's the one i'd use. In fact i do use one Just replace the media if it has dried up

Yeah that sounds like the name he told me. He said it works great. So what exactly are the beads? I know he said I can get them from the pet store.

don't use anything that absorbs ammonia because it will mess up the filtration cycle. Just have ceramic beads or sponge in the filters. If you want to remove chemicals or medications then add some carbon (black granulated stuff). Run both filters if you can because it will give you a back-up if one fails.
