Yikes! Ok I'm starting to plan my aquarium (either a 10g or a 20g) and I'm doing research on everything that has to go into it, filter, pumps, heater.. etc etc.

My main and most important question is what filter is the best? I've read things about power filters, box filters, under gravel filters, sponge filters, canister filters, bed filters and trickle filters :fun: I just don't know what to use

Could you guys let me know what you use? Or what works best for you? ;)

hiya

I use a fluval 2+ for my 15 gallon tank. it is a box which sits inside the aquarium, it sucks in the water through slits in the bottom and expels it from the top. I find it does a good job of aerating and filtering the water, has never broken, and is easy to clean. For bigger tanks different styles of filtration are often rquired, but i think the one i have does a good job for small tanks. if you'd like to read some reviews of different brands of filters, you can look at practicalfishkeeping.com.

i have a rena filstar internal filter in my tank and my water is absolutely crystal... they are quite cheap aswell, they come in 4 sizes and mine is very quiet. well worth having a look at

Matters on the fish you have. If your going to use live plants. I had 3 filters running on my 55g. UGF, hang on back and wet dry filter. I don't like in the tank filters they take up tank space and can be a problem when cleaning them and checking to make sure they are still working up to par.

In that sized tank, I'd go with a simple Aqua Clear filters. If it's a 10g, Aqua Clear Mini is sufficient (although AC150 will also be ok as the water flow rate can be reduced, and give you room for future growth). If 20g, I'd go with AC200.

I personally prefer the Pengiun Series. :)

Everybody is going to give you a different opinion.

Hey guys, thanks for all the info! I know everyone has different preferences but it's good to know what works

I'll definitely check into all the filters mentioned, it's weird because I've only seen airpumps here, usually the Elite series but if there are airpumps, there gotta be filters!

Thanks again guys!

Both Aqua Clears and Penguins will work and they are common - you should find them in just about any aquarium stores....

Good luck! ;)

I gotta agree with Def...I have got a Fluval filter on my 30gal and and Eheim on my 75gal....(along with AC300s on both).....the Fluval is WAAAYYY better than the eheim.....I mean, the eheim didn't even come with instructions.....whats with that???
No Instruction? Ooh dear :fun: I'll definitely look into a fluval and a aqua clear (and check they have instructions ) Both sound great,

Thank you!! :flex:

Just to add my take on this (not that you need it!!) but for internal i'd agree that Fluvals are extremely good, but their externals are a bit pony to be honest. I have 3 of them and I'm replacing one with an Eheim this weekend, and looking into replacing the other 2 over the next couple of months!!

EDIT: sorry I just saw the size of your tank. You're not gonna be getting an external on that, so I'd say you're not going to go far wrong with the Fluval internals!!! :D

Fluval all the way, get a 2 plus, or 3 :D.

I have the fluval 4 in my 20g, with a fluval 1+, runs sweet.

I'd jsut like to add that at one point my fluval started making weird annoying noises, so I emailed them and tehy emailed me back promptly with excellent info on what tehy thought was wrong and how i should fix it, which I thought was great customer service.

The only thing is that I'm not sure tehres a suitable size of fluval internal for a 10g, the fluval 1+ would be too small but the 2+ I think would be too strong as it makes a strong current even in my 15 gallon tank.

anway I'm done with confusing the issue now ;) good luck finding a filter and setting up your new tnak :)

i use a undergravel filter for my tropical fish and they live just a happy life thatn with the fluval 3 i used to have in. :D
But its up to you but i would have a undergravel filter (cheap, and you can buy addons) If you do get a undergravel filter the best one to get is a INTERPET one you can buy carbon cartriges for them.
