When referring to fish, do you use common names or scientific (latin) ones?

Scientific names for me, I mainly deal with Killifish, so theres no other way.

Yeah, I prefer scientific too. No chance of a mixup providing ID is correct of course.

I tend to use both. Many people think I'm swearing at them if I use the latin names who don't know much about fish, so if I say to them "Clown fish", they go "Ahh yess!"

I use both. It's easier to use scientific when talking w/people who know fish and common with people who don't know as much about the hobby.

I found out that avid fish keepers in my local reef club don't like pet names

I told him I wanted a nemo when I get my salt tank set up (every1 knows who nemo is) and he said don't call it that. I said well I know the scientific name as well...amphiprion ocellaris and he said that's better. :)

I generally use common names, but I keep the scientific names handy. Unfortunately, that doesn't help me that much - even though there's so many fish stores for such a small city, three out of five consistently mislabel fish regardless of which name I bring in.
