hi all, where can i source large lumps of bogwood. - like the pieces people have for a 6 foot tank.

i want some really heft bits, like 3 foot+ in length, thick and heavy! i can only seem to find the tiny bits around here that are like 30-50cm long. i have searched fleabay and also aquaristclassifeds to no joy.

im in the surrey area if that helps.

sorry i cant help, but all power to you - will look amazing, but i dont envy your wallet !!

i might have to change my plans and source some slate or round stones.

have u got any rivers or lakes near you? if so go wading and u should find some big pieces for free :good: its the same place all the lfs stuff comes from. plus u can have some fun finding it

i think "bogwood" is just a genric term for any wood thats been in river/lakes for years. i remember reading somewhere that its actually fossilied wood after spending so long submerged and having various bacteria turning it into what it is today.

Nick. i know its not close to you but i was at wharf aquatics yesterday and they had plenty of huge bogwood. not cheap though mate.

my lfs has some for sale at £6 per kilo on large pieces. is this the going rate???

sounds quite cheap to me. i think its 9/kg at mine. pets at home wood is hugely cheaper than LFS bogwood though.

Does it need to be 'bog' wood? i got mine from a river on dartmoor pic 1 pic 2
yeah, i will try to get some like that!

do you know what bits are safe to use? (obviously not crumbling wood) - i will soak and scrub it as well.

I would be interested to know where to get large bits from. Apart from Classifieds I can't find any really. I went to Maiden Head Aquatics and they didn't have any. Neither did the Gold Fish Bowl in Oxford so any help would be appreciated

Also it seems the going rate depends but I found anywhere between £6-£9 per KG to be about right.

I am looking out for a piece about 22"x12"x12" so any input would be good

Kind Regards,

Adam

P.S sorry for mini highjack just seemed silly starting new thread, Would also be interesting to find out what is safe or how to tell as I have a river about 2 mins from me which I could try.

not been used and will need soaking for afew weeks i would think.

will get a pic of them done and post
in nottingham so let me know if your interested in buying?

i think it needs to be hardwood i tried to get oak where i could and only took bit that looked like they had been submerged for a long time i just soaked it in very hot water scrubbed it and repeated a few times

I was at Wildwoods today and they had some huge pieces of wood.
Not cheap though.

yeah i have been put off by the price places charge for wood.
i think i might go down the stone route.. but i have something very unusual and special in the planning.

might need a trip down to the local stone merchants. watch this space.
