i'm just wondering where you get ammonia to do a fishless cycle with?

i thought amonia is the thing you DON"T want, and the main reason to cycle...

i could be wrong tho...

not in the uk... maybe i'm not looking hard enough

My LFS - Maidenhead Aquatics Cambridge stocks it, don't know it there is a Maidenhead near you, might be worth trying it. It's also sold under the Jeyes brand as " Jeyes Kleen Off Ammonia cleaner" reported to be on sale in both Boots and B&Q, although none of the branches round me had it :-(

Usually wherever you buy your laundry detergent from? This is a time where you really do want to buy the cheapest one possible, the cheap stuff doesn't have expensive detergents in it, just pure ammonia :good:

The best one to get is Jeyes, it is much cheaper than the the stuff you get from your LFS and it's more concentrated so you need less.
Two warnings, don't sniff it, and I know by me saying that you will want to sniff it even more, but honestly don't do it.
Secondly, don't just buy any old household Ammonia, it needs to be pure and scented.
Stick with Jeyes and you will be safe, as said previously Boots, Robert Dyers etc.

You do not want ammonia in a tank with fish, however, if you are trying to cycle a tank without fish, you need to supply ammonia to your growing bacteria colonies so they are large enough to take over when the fish are installed.

Research fishless cycling if you need more info. There are loads of threads about it. Here for example.

You can get ammonia from Boots in the UK.

Jeyes IS NOT ammonia... its a range of cleaners with all sorts of nast chemicals.
And absolutly, definatly... positivly DO NOT use ANYTHING that is "scented"

If you cannot find PURE ammonia locally... PM me :good:

dont want to sound discusting but the cheapest form of ammonia is your own wee wee lol. i know this sounds funny but this is how i cycled my tank. i know cheapo ha ha but this worked very well and have had very good results no losses wot so ever until i got my knife fish without any reaserch  woops that was a wile ago know hes happy in my 200 gal (uk) know :good:

Just re-reading through this topic and noticed a typo in my last comment, thanks Rooster for also pointing this out, I meant to say only use "un-scented"

However, I still maintain Jeyes is pure ammonia and a lot of people use it, including myself.

Just one comment on peeing in the tank, this is the poor mans route, but it does work. The only problem you have is regulating the ammonia in your wee. Today you drink water all day, which produces diluted ammonia, tomorrow your down the pub for a heavy seession, highly concentrated ammonia. Trouble is during the fishless cycle you need to know exactly how much ammonia to put in every day or it's tough keeping track of things.

After my last post I just wanted to be sure I was recommending the right product, I have double checked and the correct product is Jeyes Kleen Off.
Check out the pinned Fishless cycle topic in the Begginers forum.

You can buy it in large boots stores, labelled household ammonia. Also check out little corner shops/chemists. Thats where is got mine from and it def wasnt scented cos it stunk, a word of warning....dont give it a good sniff like i did, itl make your eyes watter n will strip the lining from your nose.
