at what readings will i need water change.. for example - ammonia 5, nitrite 5, and nitrate 50
im currently in cycle right now and not sure when is too high

During cycle: ammonia: .25, Nitrite: .25, nitrate doesn't matter that much

After cycle ammonia and nitrite should be 0, Nitrate should be below 50 IMO. But water changes should be done every 1-2 weeks.

edit: are you doing a fish in cycle or fishless?

Glad the last Poster edited and asked whether or not you are using fish or not to cycle.

If you are cycling WITHOUT fish (ie adding ammonia) then water changing (untill completed) is not normally required unless things go horribly wrong!

If you are cycling WITH fish and you have levels of 5.0ppm for ammonia and nitrite then you MUST do an immediate 50% water change (remembering to dechlorinate first) and then revert to daily 20% water changing. Got to get those levels down ASAP they are VERY dangerous and you would loose fish.

So....with fish or without??
