What's the difference between an aquarium vaccuum and an aquarium syphon? Is it 2 different words for the same thing?

The same thing. Other things can be used to syphon the water out, but usually a gravel vac or syphon will have a larger tube of plastic on the end.

unless i am mistaken, the main difference between the two is that one is powered electrically and one manually. A syphon is just a tube that uses the difference in height and atmospheric pressure to push water from the aquarium into..say a bucket. i use one and it is really easy to use :)

never used an electric vacuum...but i bet they'll helpful too
