Hi,

Im looking for an algae eater to go my 2 gal tank along with a male betta. It has no filter though. Can anyone suggest anything that would be ok in there? I really want something thats not going to get more than a couple of inches long as its only a small tank, though i dont want my betta, who's particularly agressive, to eat it!!! I have tried looking on various websites but theres just too much information and im not really sure what to look for!!

If anyone could help id be very grateful! :)

Thanks, Jess

Not sure i like the sound of those Chinese algae eaters!! Aren't they supposed to be REALLY aggressive?! i dont want them to eat my betta!!!lol

CAEs get large and very aggressive. IMO they should not even be sold in pet stores, but I digress. I would get a couple of ottos. You might be pushing it stocking wise, but with a little extra on your water changes I think you'll be fine.

I have a betta, 2 sepraes, 1 cardinal (his buds didn't make it) and a chinise algae eater. Strange mix huh? They don't bug eachother at all though! I've had my CAE for 3 years now and he's only 3 inches or so. :D

Hi Jess :)

About the best thing for an unfiltered tank of that size would be African Dwarf Frogs. They are very small and peaceful creatures that seem to get along quite well with bettas.

I think you could easily put a pair of them in that tank. Filtration should not be a problem because aquatic frogs do just fine without it and so do bettas if you do good and frequent water changes.

The one very important thing that you might need to add is a secure cover because they are jumpers who can escape through very small openings.

Here's a link to a pinned article in the Invertebrates and Amphibians forum that talks about them and their larger relatives the African Clawed Frogs:

Hey! Thanks for all the replies!! Its very confusing... i worry too much about my fish!!!!lol

I think ill stay away from the CAE's - i dont want to be stuck with something thats too big for either of my tanks.

Inchworm - Ive never seen African Dwarf Frogs here!!!lol Do you get them from normal fish type shops? how much are they? do they need to be kept in pairs? Sorry for all the questions!!! The tank has a very secure lid so that shouldnt be a problem!!! Will they clean the tank though?!

Jess

I'm sorry I didn't notice the tank wasn't filtered :*) Sorry about that, ADFs would be a good choice  Pairs are good, can usually be found in most fish stores, if not they could probably order you some. The will clean up a little on the bottom, but they should have their own diet and should not rely on leftovers. As with any bottom feeder, the cleaning of the tank is ultimately left up to you. :)

Hey Sorrell,

Yeah, Arnie (My betta - dont ask about the name..lol) has an unfiltered home until he can have the 10 gal all to himself when i move my others into my 120gal!!! :) (Not in the v near future)

I shall sort the tank out first - having trouble with cloudy water!!! And then i shall look into some ADF's :) my lfs should have some - if not ill ask them where i can get some! I have a bristlenose pleco too, i assume its the same as that? supplement with whatever food they specifically need, as well as whatever they clean up at the bottom of the tank?

Thanks so much for the help! :)

Jess

Hi there,

Completely un-relevant, but do you have a heater with your Betta, or doesn't it need it?

I have four ADF's in my 30L (6gal) along with a lot of other fish, they are extremely peaceful, lively and active in groups, and I bought mine for only £3!
