depends on the Betta I guess..one of mine rejected a 3g and was unhappy till I put him back in his 7.5g, the other is perfectly happy in the 3 g.....! :D

I think it depends on the Betta. Spiderman is quite happy in the 10 gallon. He did fine in 1/2 of a Dual Betta Hex, then one gallon, until I moved him to the 10 gallon. Now that he's been in the 10 gallon, he *hates* having to go back to the Dual Betta Hex and quite mad at me if I put him in the Hex (had to put him in there one time, as he got sick and that was the only spot I could put him). Some fish don't like that much room. As BettaBoyz said - she has a Betta who didn't the ten gallon or the one gallon he was in, and doesn't like the half gallon either. So, yeah, I think it depends on the fish.

BettaBoyz: I'm curious - how can you tell your Betta is rejecting his big tank(s)? I'm not doubting that he is, I'm just wondering how you've determined that.

cool, before ppl would talk bout the tank, now ur talking about the fish, sum stupbourn fish i tell ya

Liz, i know Pierce hates having so much space because of the way he acts and reacts to them!

when he was in the 10g, even with only the Loaches and two Platties, he sulked. always hidden with his nose in the back corner, he snapped at anything that came too close. in the 1g, he did the same thing, but it was easier since and Aquaview is all corner, he sat in the front and glared at me, only moving to get water and eat. i swear, he had a little pile of poop collecting under him, and nowhere else! in the .5g he can't sit in a corner, since it's a bit rounded, but instead attacks his plant very lazily from his perch on his little spiny shells. the only time he's truly happy is during water changes, when he's in a quart Hex for about fifteen minutes, a monster bubble nest appears!

he is getting a bit more used to the .5g now, but he's still sulking a bit. it really does depend on the Betta, maybe i just have a sulky fish!

A puddle of mud is suitable for a betta. That's the beauty of evolution. However, better accomodations would be preferred. It all depends on your betta's preference b/c some don't like being cramped, while others can't stand being in big tanks. I say 1-5 gallons is best.

A mud puddle, indeed!! :< :grr:

My betta, Ruby  would be highly offended at the very thought!!!! :X
In fact, he's sulking, right now, because I took his favorite cave out of his tank and put it in another tank! I'm going to have to put it back later tonight to cheer him up.

Perhaps wild bettas live in such conditions, but todays highly bred varieties need much better accommodations.

I knew I'd offend someone w/ that. Of course, I didn't mean it, hence the "better accomodations would be preferred..."

I've got bettas of my own (which reminds me, I have to update my sig, again) and would never mean anything like that. I picked it up from a book, and it's just a surprising fact. :D
