What Type Of Shrimp Is This?

I think it's what's generically known as a mountain shrimp. See the pic on this page: http://www.tropicalaquatica.co.uk/shrimp.htm (click on the picture not the text).

Pretty close I think 2" is a good size shrimp and it could still be growing. River shrimp is a very general term for shrimp with nice long pinchers.

Look up Palaemon elegans that's pretty close not sure if it is that. it's more of a salt water shrimp.

OH! my lfs has the one with the longer claws as well! their about an inch and a half and have the same color pattern too! As to what their name was i was wondering the same thing and they look pretty neat if you ask me!

Hi guys thanks for all of the replies! You are all really helpful, I love this forum! Both of the shrimps are fine and have really settled in well :D The larger more colourful one seems to have claimed it's territory on a mangrove tree roots ornament

2" Definitely keep an eye on them if you have small fish or fish with long fancy fins, etc. as a general rule long arm shrimp can be known to nip fins and catch small fry etc. (as far as I'm aware)

So, I have been noticing that my guppies and one of my favorite platies tails have all been torn, and I was assuming it was the shrimps, so I seperated the guppies to let their tails grow back, and switched on the aquarium lights this morning to find my favourite platy dead, with one of the shrimps on top of it. Now I know that it is the shrimps doing this, I am going to put the guppies back into the aquarium and seperate the shrimps. I don't quite know where to put them, or what to do with them though

BY THE WAY! I think the shrimps are actually red clawed shrimp,

which are commonly sold as ghost shrimp, but grow bigger and are known to be fin nippers and sometimes grab the fish by their tail and eat them alive, I cannot believe that my favourite platy was eaten alive :-( I just feel like squishing the horrible things  :shifty:

Take them back to the LFS, get a refund.

Some of the larger shrimp will have a go at fish, but not all of them are guilty of this. Is there any chance your platty died of other causes and you just happened to find the shrimp doing what they do best, scavanaging? Guppies can be pretty nippy themselves, and are not adverse to taking the odd nip out of each others tails.

If you had especially wanted glass shrimp and the LFS sold you the wrong shrimp (either on purpose or by unwitting accident) then see if the LFS will take these shrimp back off you, so you can restock with the shrimp you wanted.

The platy seemed perfectly healthy yesterday, and I'm not sure that I could get a refund because I got them a few months ago when they were small, and they have only recently started fin nipping, and platy killing  One of the guppies just has a little stump where his tail used to be, and I can't let that happen to any others
