What type of fish should I get for my freshwater aquarium? Something that is not to fragile and nice and colorful. Any suggestions?

What kind of tank do you have?
Would you be interested in livebearers? Guppies come in many different colours. Platy-fish are nice and bright. Swordtails? Mollies?

If you want color, I suggest this:
Male Guppies (very colorful, and no babies)
Celestial Pearl Danios are very beautiful
Neon Tetras are finicky, but cool colors
Sparkling Gouramis, small but colorful
If you want the challenge, i suggest these

They would need a species only tank though, but they are very colorful

guppies, neons, harleyquin rasbora, celestial pearl danios, galaxy rasbora, a betta, gourami, BN pleco, platies, mollies, Endlers, golden wonder killies, sarpae tetras, and black skirt tetras are just some of the fish that are suitable for a 20 gallon, but you can only have a couple of these fish not all of them in one tank

good starter fish are guppy platy and mollys

Tetras are fast swimmers, I would recommend those for longer tanks. Unless they are smaller tetras like ember tetras for example. Tetras are schooling fish and the bigger the group the better, but no less than 6! I find one nice large group a lot more beautiful than 2 small groups.

Another thing to consider is which area of the tank any given fish takes up.
Although what I see in my tanks is that they are usually everywhere. My Betta, when he doesn't build his bubblenest, or explores his kingdom he actually loves hanging out with the Kuhlis which do their ballet dances in bottom to mid-level. My Rummynose Tetras usually swim bottom to mid-level. The Platy are all over the tank, and I've noticed the Otocinclus occasionally even schooling(?) with the Rummynose Tetras when they aren't hanging out on the glass or on the leaves of plants.

Don't keep Platy-fish in the same tank as Swordtails, they interbreed, unless they're all males of course.

A nerite snail, or an apple snail would be a fun, quirky addition to a tank.
