Hi all, so first bit of a backstop cut short, my other half was complaining that we had no cupboard space and so wanted to swap the stand we had for my 3ft tank to a larger one. I explained to be safe we should get a tank stand so that it would take the weight. went shopping and just so happened that my lfs was shutting down and everything was stupidly cheap. so here we are now 2 months later with a 10 foot tank and it's looking a bit bare. so was thinking shoaling species that are active and colourful any advice welcome. thanks in advance

I'm no expert but I believe that Zebra Danios are shoaling and also fast swimmers who would love that long tank. I have many Rummy-Nosed tetras in my six-footer and they always hang aropund together in a large group of about fifty.

Very long tank, wish I had lol but I can never find Long tanks where I live, its always just Regular boring old fish tanks lol

Clown loaches will stick together and they do really well in groups. They also get pretty big (under correct conditions) so they would love a tank that size - so would I! Clowns are also really active, happy fish that are interesting to watch.

Wow, what a unique tank - looks very appealing to me - besides the 10' length, what are the other dimensions?

I believe a group of Denison Barbs would be very happy in that set up. They are wonderfully colored, are happiest in a group, are super active and mature to a pretty good size at 4" - 6". A group of 8-9-10 in that set up would be exciting!

I'm not sure we should be recommending species with out first knowing;

Is the water hard or soft?

What fish do you have in there already?

What temperature is the tank?

A couple of the fish suggested (zebra danios, Denison barbs) need much cooler temperatures than the angel you already have would be happy with, for example.

First thoughts - Big tank big fish. Maybe though you could do the opposite, ie Big tank, nano fish. A well planted tank with some massive schools of small fish like ember tetras and a herd of corydoras would look spectacular.

Wow loads of replies thanks all. The angels have since gone.

I have bn plecs as they won't stop breeding.

leopard danio shoal about 16

Emperor blue tetra shoal about 7

Ember tetras about 10

Sorry a free other tetra species I can't remember them all in about 50 fish so far still looks empty lol

Side note

It's the plant tank from my lfs so 10 foot long by 40cm square

Welcome TFF :)

1) No matter what fish you put, without decoration it will always look empty. Seems like you have decent lighting so you should definitely get live plants.

2) Decide for only ONE shooling species and put a decent number of those. Always looks much better than a mix of many different ones. I love the tank dimensions but personally think that 40 by 40cm is not huge so your are better off choosing rather smaller species. Imho it is not suitable for Denison barbs as they can become fairly large.

3) What kind of water parameters do you have? Without that info it is worthless to recommend any specific fish.

Man! That is a very cool tank! I can't wait to see what you add! Please consider doing a journal thread so we can follow!!!
