It's not my goldfish tank. My boyfriends dad phoned us up and happened to mention in passing that they'd bought 2 fancy goldfish and put them in a bowl. I was like  But we were on holiday at the time so not alot that I could do. Just asked him if he'd like any advice when I get back and he said yes :hyper:

So I've just come back having set them up with:
A new 30l clearseal (they were going to have my spare hospital tank till my dad decided to put a crack in it lol)
My spare fluval 2+ (with mature media from my own tropical tank)
and a few stems of cabomba - I'll be adding a variety of plants in the coming weeks as I prune in my tank at home.

I've been completely frank with them. And have said the 30l will only be temporary if they'd like to keep them until they're fully grown. And have explained eventually they'll need an 80-90l tank and that goldfish always need double filtration. Ie. The 30l they're in atm has the fluval 2+ on it even though that's recommended for 60l tanks. I also said that white cloud mountain minnows weren't a good idea as tank mates but that I'd do some research to find out what they can have.

So anyways, a couple of questions.
They're at 1" and 1.5" atm, how long will they be comfortable in the 30l(18" x 10" x 10")? And by how long I mean what size before they need the next upgrade.
What other fish are suitable as tank mates for goldfish? Would they be able to add any yet, or would they have to wait until the next upgrade etc?
Have I given them good + correct advice?

Oh just thought of something to add. I tested the water in the bowl they came out of and the ammonia was at 3ppm! They've been in levels of 1-3ppm for the past week.

Is this likely to have caused any lasting damage? I gave them a good check over in the new tank and they seemed absolutely fine. But anything I should tell them to be aware of?

Adding plants isn't a very good idea as goldfish eat plants. I'll bet you the cabomba you put in there is already eaten as that is what I used to feed my goldfish as a treat. They eat the needles and leave the stems. I would say they have a few months before they will out grow it.

Thanks but I know they'll eat the plants. Hence why I'm just giving them what I would've thrown away during pruning my own tank. I've told them that they'll eat the plants so not to buy any, and that if they want to buy some decorations then a couple of rocks and maybe a piece of wood would be a good idea.

Oh and I asked for what sort of size the fish can get to before they need the next upgrade, not for a length of time...

I would not add any fish with them. If you feel the need you could add a couple little minnows but that's about it. The waste from goldfish is like none other. Two 2" goldfish is like 30 1" neons.

Did you actually read my post properly or not?
1. They aren't mine
2. I'd already pointed out I knew full well they require double filtration.

Two fancies need 80-90l when they're fully grown with a filter capable of doing around a 200l tank.
I'm sure you're trying to be helpful but it annoys me when people don't actually read the post.

I read the post. If your going to act like that then you will be lucky to get any replies.

I did answer your questions, they just were not the answers you wanted to hear.

You didn't answer my questions at all.

I wanted to know what size they can get to before they need an upgrade. Whether they reach that size in 1 week or 1 year... You said... a few months. Cause that's really useful...

You told me not to add plants even though I'd said they were only coming out of my own tank after they'd been pruned. Ie. Cost nothing and give the fish something to do.

I'd already said that I'd advised them against mountain minnows yet you used the phrase
If you feel the need you could add a couple little minnows but that's about it
They aren't mine so why would I feel the need exactly? I'm asking for advice for someone else.

And finally I'd already noted that I knew goldfish need double filtration and for some reason you still felt like you needed to tell me...

I didn't 'Not like the answers', you just didn't say anything that was actually useful. I don't have an attitude, but that doesn't mean that I'm not going to be straight with someone if they aren't actually answering my questions.
As I said, I'm sure you're trying to help, and I appreciate the thought. But unless you actually read my post properly and respond accordingly then it's not really helping anyone by you posting.

Ok instead of reading my post word for word, try reading it with meaning.

I said to not add plants because the fish will eat them non stop and that can cause them to over-feed which = death.

I said a couple of months before they need to re-home them because nobody can tell you a specific length before they will need to be re-homed. It all depends on the shape, size, of both the fish and the tank. Without actual dimensions of the tank, nobody can ever answer that.

I said you because I'm old and got confused, I'm sorry im not a teenager still.

You're correct without dimensions you can't give a size...but then if you'd read my post properly like I said then you'd have noticed I'd put the dimensions in it... I put them there for a reason.

And if you'd actually backed up your statement with reason then that would be fine. You do have a point that I hadn't thought of... So I'll do a bit of re-search and try n find out if any of the plants in my tanks aren't likely to be eaten by goldfish. Thanks for the heads up.

On a protein rich diet I would think 6-8 weeks until they need a new home. Why buy new just use craigslist or fleabay....

Tankmates amphibians would be cool

I've basically told them I'll keep my eye out for second hand tanks. And just wanted to know how long they'd be ok in that tank until I need to be telling them that actually they NEED to buy one now.
Ie. can't just put it off.

How much are you expecting them to grow in the following 6-8 weeks? And should I really be pushing them to upgrade straight to something like a 90l. I was going to suggesting a 60l then a 90l.
Hoping that they'd decide at 60l that actually they'd rather re-home the goldfish in a pond and switch to tropicals. lol.

I've planted the seed anyways... hehe.

What amphibians can you have - ADF?..anything else?

He not she and I still asked for a size.

The real question is why are you bothered? And I didn't yell at you, I didn't even really say much at first. I got annoyed after you repeatedly responded after not having properly read my original post. At first I just wanted you to clarify what size you thought they'd get two in the 'few months'.

Same thing as I've asked salty
