What really got me started was a friend who had tanks and a bowl and 2 goldfish thhat were given to me. I upgraded to a 5 gallon, and I became very interested in the hobby, and started to explore what else there was besides goldfish, and like it. Plus my friend and I would talk about our setups, plus he works in a petshop, and gives me free fish.

What started me with fish keeping well at first when I was 8 I had 2 goldfish in a 1g bowl I think. Then at my school they had alot of pets that they let the kids take home for the summer and I took there goldfish home for the summer then after that I got bored with fish because they kept dieing and quit for a few years then when I got in the 7th grade I did a project where I took a 10g with 4 black tetras to measure how many times they breathed in a minute and I still have 3 out of the 4 black tetras since one of them died of pop eye and now I have expanded from my 10g to a long 20g and my other tanks you can see in my sig and I still have those 3 black tetras to this day. My gender is male. I am only 14 so I don't have a job but once I turn 16 I'm going to go work at a lps.

Thanks for everyone taking the time to write in this post or to complete the poll, I really enjoy reading about other peoples experiences and like others find this sort of poll fun.

No wonder there is a wealth of knowledge on here, most of you lot have had tanks since before you were even in your teens :S

My husband came home with a very small fountain. He decided to use the pump to make a "pond" on our balcony. It was a 75G Tupperware tub. The pump pumped water up a tube and into a watering can. The water then went into a reservoir that was above the Tupperware. There were a couple of air lines running from holes drilled in the side of the reservoir back into the Tupperware. It was beautiful.

Then a friend gave us their 20G tank that had 1 black skirt tetra and an 11" pleco. We had that for a couple of months, added a few fish(mostly neons and cherry barbs). Then a friend gave us a red tipped silver dollar who was covered in ich. I had no idea what it was. It wiped out the entire tank:-( .

We still had the goldfish that were in the "pond". We had moved into a house and the Tupperware was now inside. The same friend gave us another 20G tank, so being total newbs we put 8 of the 12 goldfish in there. We gave the remaining gold fish to my daughter's babysitter. She tired of them, so they were given to the lfs.

A few months after the ich fiasco we came into some money so we bought a 55G and it was all down hill from there. Now we have the 55G, a 30G, a 20G, 2 10G and 10 betta bowls(all 1G or bigger).

2. Age when you got your first tank?

I was very young, maybe 8 or 9, it didn't last. I have always loved fish, but never knew how to care for them properly, so I didn't stay into the hobby. I really got back into it when I was 24(I am almost 27 now)

Female.

I am currently an accountant at a franchise head office.

1.& 2. My family has had a few fish tanks when I was growing up. We started with the 10gal goldfish setup(I was 8 or 9) but had a lot of conflicts over who was going to do the cleaning and the goldfish got boring fast. We then went to tropicals(15gal). I remember having Zebra Danios, Angles, Neons, Barbs, Glass Catfish and a False Flying Fox as well as a few large snails. Twenty some years later(a year and a half ago) I was home in Denver with the family and several of my friends and family had tanks and Betta jars and my kids thought they were really neat. After coming home we got an advertisement from an LFS having a starter sale and my wife thought it would be a good way for me to relax(she thinks I have some issues with stress  (she may be right)). We got a 30gal and now she is wishing she had tossed the ad!

1. I got into fishkeeping when my daughter demanded 2 goldfish for her 9th birthday - we got 2 fish and a bowl from petstore - they didnt look happy and I did what I should have done before we got them - looked up information on the internet so next came the big tank and all that goes with it. Since got a few more goldies and then decided I wanted some little fish too so went for another tank of guppies, platys and neons so I could go the tropical route with more live plants as the goldies destroy everything I put in .

2. I guess I got my first tank at 32 - seeing as my daughters fish are now in 'my tank' and she just gets to look at them hehehe. My other daughter now has fish too - although I have adopted them all.

Many things really. One was due to losing our two rats to old age and they really didn't feel old enough, if that makes sense. Also my son is special needs and I figured it'd be good for him and to topple it my own health was still declining despite all efforts and I wanted to have something in the house I could lay in bed and watch if I wasn't up to reading. I never use a tv in my room unless utterly desperate. Fish are far better.
Soon after I realised things weren't all that simple and no one had explained about the wonders of fishless cycling, which was when I joined here. Thankfully, with help I only lost two of the 15 I had then and they are all still live and swimming to this day. I also now have a very bad case of mts with my 8th tank arriving tomorrow. :*)

OK now I have time, so lets heare mine:
1.I love all animals, but am alergic to fur, dust, feathers (luckily less and less with time), and I wanted to get some, and thought of reptiles, but since I have "different parents" who aren't really animkal lovers I got 2 fish, they were a pair of guppies in a 20l and they multiplied like crazy, got a new 20g and they were still going multiple, until they sudenly couldn't reproduce because of degenerartion (2 parent's, about 500 babies from them and their offspring and their offspring's offspring... in 2 years) so I have given up till about a year and a half ago, when I started the 20l again, have it now, no more tanks, I share my room with my brother, maybe will get more in a year when I get my room.

2. I guess I was about 6 back then, didsn't have a clue.

3. 13 year old male

4. School (as a pupil)

I think the first fish I ever had was a goldfish named Oliver. One day i think i was like 5 or 6 I told my mom I had always wanted a goldfish named Oliver. She went over to my cousin and she gave her her old goldfish, and told me the name was Oliver and I said "OH MY GOD I ALWAYS WANTED A FISH NAMED OLIVER!". Then I remember getting 2 goldfish and keeping them in a JAR of all things, with a metal fassoned lid thingy, brobably not more than a fourth of a gallon, and I decided to put the lid on before I went to school, came home and found them dead :X (pretty stupid i know). But it really started when my dad got me a 10 gal. fish tank which i still have, and after that a 7.5gal. which i still use. Now I decided to start a new aquarium at my moms house, and I've come a long way from the jar. Im still in school, not even in highschool, but nonetheless am very engulfed in fish.

Hmmm...I think it was my evil stepfather. He really liked fish and I was "allowed" to have a ten gallon tank of my own when I was 11 or 12. However, that didn't last too long (both the tank and the stepfather!) I really did not get into fishkeeping until I was 42 (last year). My daughter wanted to get rid of her 20 gallon tank and that's when it all started. I have five tanks running now.

2. Age when you got your first tank: 11 or 12

4. Occupation: Marketing Rep for an insurance company

Edit: And oh yes, I have to add this. My first tank was one of those tanks with the metal framing on the outside!!!
