We just bought this pleco at the LFS. Not sure what it is since it didn't have a label and the fish guy had no idea either.

I think it's a Royal pleco, but just want to make sure. It looks just like one from googling photos of royals

Also how much do these usually go for? I know prices can vary, but a general idea would be nice.

It is a type of Royal Pleco yes, but there are quite a few that share this common name

likely to be either a L027 or L190

google is your friend :good:

i just had a quick look and the L190 will be an inch or 2 shorter at full length (13"), while the L027 is also the 'golden panaque', and the colouration reflects this. roughly the same pattern, but seems to be more of the gold as oppose to the green and black of the L190. you might have to wait till it grows a bit to find out. either way, they're both big fish.

i would say from the colouring and the space between the stripes its L190, but the stripes could change as it gets older. how much did you pay ? whenever i see "the shop didnt know what it was" i think of ridiculous bargains.

Our LFS overcharges for their fish. I think we paid $7 for it. That's probably close to normal price for one? But that's a good price at that LFS hehe

And thanks for the info everyone!!!

what

$7 ??

thats ridiculously cheap. unless they are much cheaper in the us, i usually see 4-5 inch fish go for 50 pounds !! thats the best fish bargain ive ever heard of, without a doubt.

You got a great deal!!! In the LFS in my area that type of plec goes for $40-65!!!!!!! (if memory serves)
nice find :)
cheers

Thanks :D
We didn't even see it at first. It was in a tank w/ some rainbowfish we were debating on getting and I spotted something up under the decoration in the tank. We couldn't tell if it was actually a pleco or not.
So the LFS guy came over, and we asked him if it was a pleco. When we saw that it was, and saw that he had NO idea what kind it was, we snatched it up when he said $7 lol. The $7 price was for other teeny tiny plecos in the tank that they had listed as Rhino Pleco.

I knew we got a good deal for it... just didn't know how much of a deal it was.

Definitely a bargain BUT :oh: they grow around 13" and require bogwood in the aquarium so I hope you can meet their requirements (bogwood and large tank)

Oh yeah, it's already in the 125gallon tank w/ wood in it :)
I'm sure the mopani isn't ideal for it since it's hard, but there's another piece of wood that is a bit softer that the plecos can do whatever they do on it lol.

What are the differences between the L190 and other ones?

Usually identified by the dentition if no other obvious sign is there... you have a L190 and a lovely one at that :)

There are around 6 or so different catch locations for L27 all have quite different patterns and not all called a golden panaque.. there is also long nosed panaque, platinum, watermelon etc all under the L27 number and all with different sizes.. the size weather adult or not would not and could not be used to distinguish different L numbered plecs... size differs just as much from fish to fish as much as it does specie to species.

Is a bargain price, £50 for a 4-5 inch specimen is very expensive... should be around the £25-£30 mark but really can differ from area to area i guess.
