What Is A Dither Fish?

They help prevent fish from panicking. I have a ram, and when I have 3 rasboras. They're basically shoaling fish that allow fish to know it's safe to come out.

Or 'what are' dither fish?
from my understanding a dither fish is any type of social fish that basically fill the void or "dither" your tank to coax out your shy fish out of hiding, i've seen this term used a lot with cichlids especially the blood parrot

Just out of interest and a total stab in the dark really, and a very 'noob' question but would galaxy rasboras be a dither fish for dwarf cichlids? Or would they eat them :/

galaxy rasboras are very shy fish so may not work very well as they hide alot i use guppies as a dither fish for my g/rasboras and they become so much more confident :good:

My galaxies are very erm unshy lol even when they were in the 55 gal they never hid

Basicly, any 'active shoaling species' can be called dithers, i.e. cardinals and rummynose are used as dithers for Discus, Giant Danios are used as dithers for medium sized cichlids such as Convicts or Firemouths, and Silver Dollars are used as dithers for larger species like Oscars or Arrowanas
