What Fish With Bettas

I find that every betta has it's own personality. So it really just depends on the betta itself, like I had one that would only go with neon tetras, and I had another that wouldn't accept any other living thing in it's tank. -_-

are we talking male or female? you have slightly more options with females as they tend to be less aggressive

male bettas humm i supose it just becomes trial and error with them then i may stear away from them

there is very little that can go with males, mainly it seems to be bottom dwellers like cories, loaches and plecos, what size is the tank?

I have a 55litre tank, and keep my betta with;

4 Bronze Corys
5 Zebra Danios
2 Dwarf Gouramis
2 Bolivian Rams

I've had no problems at all with them and my Betta, but i know alot of people do with the gouramis. With things like the Zebra Danios and Bronze Corys there should be no problems at all, but with more 'elaborate' fish there may be issues. It pretty much is trial and error, but eventualy you'll get there. Bettas really are an amazing fish, and i'd definately recommend them.

how long have you had them together Scunny? he could be still getting used to his surroundings therefore not being aggressive to other fish yet

in my tank is 5 danios,2 tiger barbs,5 platties,1 albino pleco,2 clown loach,2 guppies and a male and female betta. they are all cool with each other!. the male betta was a bit aggresive at first but now all settled!

^^^ woah bad stocking
1. male and female bettas should only be kept together when breeding and even then its only for a sort time but the female sometimes is still killed.
2. males and guppies shouldn't be kept together, the male will mistake them for another male betta therefore kill them.
3. tiger barbs shouldn't be kept with slow long finned fish which the betta is and for safety and to keep aggression down should be kept in groups of at least 8.
4. if the albino pleco is one of THESE then it will grow to atleast 18" and will need a tank size of at least 5ftx2ftx2ft.
5. clown loaches also grow big, has been known to get as large as 16" but 12" is more common and for them to feel safe they need to be in groups of at least 5.
6. hoping the platies are either all same sex or 1 male 4 female, you should have at least 2/3 females to each male to avoid stress.

Over all with male bettas most have found, cories, loaches and plecos to be most successful tankmates, sometimes shrimp although some prefer to eat them

Ive got a Betta in with cardinal tetras, a couple of zebra danios a pair of celebes rainbow fish 4 cherry barbs and a britlenose catfish- was very peiceful untill a couple of days ago. Looked in the tank to find something has seriously ripped the poor Bettas fins. So it can go wrong very quickly.
Also i seem to have the worlds most non aggressive Betta..but they are very addictive fish!

I just keep my males in divided tanks and my females in a sorority tank. Everybody's happy.

I've kept male and female bettas (separately!) in a 10 gallon tank with cories, they never had any issues. It's like the bettas don't even care about them. *laughs* I had some apple snails in there as well, but the betta nipped at their feelers so I moved them in with my goldfish. The feelers grew back and stayed nice and long.

Make sure everyone has plenty of room. Cories are a favourite of mine. So much spunk.

IMO bettas are not suited to community's not only because of the fish, but because they prefer stiller water. Plus, like Seza said, things can go wrong overnight based on fish and tankmates. If you have a very peaceful betta you might be able to get away with calmer fish, but not usually. It's just a general idea bettas doesn't like their water space occupied, and they're upper-to-mid level fish, which explains why bottomfeeders don't bother them much, because they don't pose a threat the the bettas.
