What fish to add?

Perfect, sounds like you got a cory catfish. They are so much fun and perfect for your size tank. You should definitely get at least 2-3 more because they are VERY social fish and their personality really comes out in groups. Most cories get to around 3".

What do you think of the suggestion of livebearers? Those and cories go well together.

the speckly one on the black/white/blue gravel? that is a corydoras catfish. happily they only grow to 2".

You guys beat me to it! I just mooched on the catfish section on here and figured it was a peppered corydorus (sp?) - I am happy I havent made a huge clanger !!

Will definitely get a couple more - he does swim along the bottom on his own and would love him to have company !

I love the idea of getting some livebearers - BUT - I am a newbie to this - I made the big mistake when starting my tank with fish and now that I have got all the cycling sorted - dont want to make anymore. What do I need to know about having livebearers?

Check out www.fishindex.com or www.fishbase.com or www.fishprofiles.com or even www.fishinthe.net - those are all sites that have profiles on different species of fish. They tell you minimum tank size, water preference as far as temperature, pH, etc. That's the best way to learn about specific fish quickly :p

Peppered cories are great  :flex:

peppered cories sweet little fish. :) keep the water clean and feed them a good quality sinking food and they'll be fine. and 2-3 more would be great cos they are much happier in a shoal.

the main thing to consider with livebearers is that they WILL breed whther you want them to or not. so either you need capacity to hosue the fry (eg by giving them to you lfs) or you need to keep only females, or only males.

Or let them breed and and let the nature take care of them. In non-planted or lightly planted tanks, I never had success keeping fries alive as they get eaten very quickly. One survives once in a while... ;)

im too much of a wuss to do that tho..Id be like "aaah don't eat the babies! poor things" etc etc.
I used to be like that until I saw the results... ;) I kept every fry alive at one point then realized that some of them are deformed (or extremely thin) and dies eventually. So now I prefer to keep the adults in a java moss filled tank, and let the strong ones survive. So far, I have yet to see any 3 month old fries that have deformities... ;)
