I have seen Discus wormers available and I know that they eat things like beef heart that could contain worm eggs etc that then get into the fish,

But what other fish need to be wormed? And should they be routinely wormed, or only treated when they show signs of worms?

i.e. Do all fish that eat live or frozen foods need to be wormed? Do all meat eating fish need to be wormed?

i never even heard of worming fish untill a few months ago!

untill i had an outbreak of camallanus worms, these are like red worms that come out of the fish bum! They are particularly nasty as they attach themselves to the gut then protrude out of the bum like a red paintbrush! They then fall out of the host fish which is often dead by now and then the other fish then eat them.......and the cycle starts all over again.....lost 2 large angels, 2 bolivan rams and 1 dwarf rainbow to this

it was quite bad, but bought discus wormer and it seemed to clear it up...and no other fish have had any syptoms of it!

I would not worm as a precaution to it, i would only treat if you can see the symptoms of worms....like bloated stomach and also this red paintbrush-like protrusion!

hope it helps, as i said i never really knew or realised what worms look like in aquariums.....but i have treated it successfully now...

cheers

After having an outbreak of woms in our tank we now worm all new fish in quarantine. Better safe than sorry.

life cycle of worms is often longer than what peopke quarantine for.....i quarantine for approx 10 days to get a good look at them but that still didnt stop both angels and rams getting worms....the life cycle can be months and no symptoms shown till often its too late....

the worms leave the host and are then eaten by another fish....as it is a worm and looks like food....

So are there any wormers available on the market for tetra, small cichlids etc?

Or should we use something like an anti-parasite treatment on newcomers?

I guess all fish have the ability to get worms as they all have guts for the worms to chomp on.

there is de-wormer available, check my thread on it! i used it on my tank with harlequins, tetras, BN and SAE so no worries about using, just get the dose correct, i also used it in conjunction with interpet no9

the discus de-wormer worked for me but others have said it hasnt worked for them! i cant remember what the other one is called but the name is in my thread. I have been into loads of LFS near me and none sold it as a bottle, i had to buy it over the internet.

i dont give any meds unless im sure something is wrong, often put in interpet no9 anti bac in my quarrantine if i see something fishy (pardon the pun)

We used sera nematol. Don't have to half dose for scaleless fish but can't use with invertebrates.

thats the stuff!!!!

i would suggest this one over my discus worming treatment...have heard good things about this but never used it. However my discuss wormer cost 6quid from ebay and was effective.

I quarantine all my fish for two weeks. If any look like they might have worms I deworm them using Levamisole. I also deworm any wild caught fish, weather they look like they have worms of not.

Brill, Thanks all. lots of useful info.

Saw that someone was having nematode problems (in the emergencies section) I wonder if this stuff could kill them off too?

Levamisole is only availbale via a VET over here in the Uk, i rang my vet and they wouldnt give me any...

best thing to use is the discus wormer i used or the sera product as its easily bought over the internet...

not safe with snails or shrimps!

the life cycle of the worms can be more than 2 weeks, as i said previosuly i quarantined mine for 10 days and didnt notice the worms for many weeks more

Is the stuff harmful for plants cause if not, I just found a good method to treat my fish weather they have it or not and to kill off my snails!!
