Hey guys, I'm new to the fish scene and after speaking with a very knowledgeable employee at Aquarium Adventure for two hours last night, I decided that I'm going with a 55 gallon tank to house some Cichlids. He recommended that I get a Fluval 304 and a Penguin 330 to filter the tank. As for the heater, he told me I should go with an Ebo Jager 150w. What do you guys think? Are they good for the money compared to other types of filters and heaters? Are there any others that you'd recommend over the ones I mentioned?

I read a few reviews on the Fluval series of filters and quite a few people complained about the fragility of the impeller and how it had to be replaced often. Is that correct? Other than that, the rest of the reviews were favorable.

Thats a heap of filtration there, but then again with cichlids you need it.
I would go for a 300watt lay down filter cause you can hide it, but it all sounds good.

What type of cichlids are you getting?

Isn't a cannister filter one that you can lay down behind/under the tank somewhere?

I'm still learning about the different types of Cichlids, but I'm leaning towards the more aggressive ones; perhaps a few Convicts, Jack Dempseys, Green Terrors, and maybe Oscars.

I would get an Eheim Pro 2 filter and a bigger wattage heater!
With the heater just make sure it has a numberd thermostat on it so you can accuratly control the temp of your tank. I dont think the make is all that important.

If you could afford it an Eheim Wet & dry filter would be amazing for those messy Cichlids!

The Ebo Jager 150w has an integrated numbered thermostat.

I've heard great things about Eheim. Thanks for the links, but I'm from the US. :D Does anyone else have any input about which filter I should get?

What is the difference between the Eheim Wet/Dry Cannister Filter and the Eheim Professional Cannister Filter?
