This may sound like a silly question to you guys, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. What exactly is dead or dry rock? I realize that it is the opposite of live rock- it's not populated by organisms yet- but is it still a specific type of rock? Does it have to be from the ocean, or can it be regular old lace rock? Thanks!

most dead rock for tanks is simply limestone or sandstone rock that is found out of water.

Dead rock is simply live rock rock that has been removed from a tank for such as period that it drys out, resulting in life in the rock dieing, resulting in die off, resulting in a cycle. You can get base rock, which is dense rock that offers no benefits apart from creating structures upon to place Live rock (LR).
