What does Walmart DO to them?

Oops, I was posting when you did bettamom!
Poor things - I've heard of the tail-less wonder! My new fishy looks a lot like your Charlie by the way. :D

Eew, fish surgery? :/

Orky - I'm pretty sure that something sinister happened to him.
And someone at WM knows what it was. Whether they did it or it was that way when they got him, I don't know.
But...
I tried to get ahold of the woman that is the head of the fish department for weeks - the first couple of times I called over there i explained what my story was and that I was trying to figure out what had happened, I just got thru to the person who was manning that dept. for the day and they kept telling me to call back during the day when the "woman who manages that dept. would be there"....
I think they told her I was trying to get ahold of her and she always had "just left" or I "just missed her". I finally called over there really early in the morning at one point, and got thru to her. She "um... uh... has no idea what could have possibly happened to him....."

Yeah, right.

Go figure, bettamomma. Oh well, at least Lucky the semi tailless wonder is safe now.

If you keep seeing things like this at that WM, I'd call the SPCA and get a cruelty investigation.

I know for a fact that my little boy had the lid closed on his tail, because I found dried remnants of his tail in the lid. There's no mistaking what that was. Not Walmart's fault, either...it was the transhippers' who put him in the cup. I know he chewed through his own tail to get through because I recognize the bite marks.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the same thing had happened to Lucky.

I wrote in to the local tv station - contacted PETA, wrote a letter to the newspaper here in town and I'm working on getting ahold of the SPCA. We don't have one here in town but i'm going to work w/the humane society to see who I can get my complaints through to. :)

I actually saw a Walmart the other day with a GREAT fish section. All the fish looked healthy, I only saw one dead one (which is AMAZING, considering it's Walmart,) and it obviously hadn't been there long, and all the bettas were in clean water and looked relatively alert. This just makes me all the more mad, because now I KNOW that it can be done. My Walmart quite seriously always has at least one dead fish in every tank (usually more like 5,) I don't think they ever clean the betta cups out, and when they take a fish out of a tank for a customer they don't even bother to wipe the water stains off the tanks.
The female bettas have been piling up lately because not many people buy them, and last week they got in a big shipment of males and nearly 3/4ths of the females mysteriously disappeared... I dread thinking what might have happened to them :/
