What does everyone use as a background

not to sound rude, but how do you hide a HOB filter w/o pretty much causing the filter to not do annything. -_-

see picture above

all you can see is the intake, not the rest of it

You could also use rocks from your local landscaping store get ones that are resonably flat but you can still drill holes in them. Buy some steel dowel lengths and star drilling holes use aqaurium silicone put in the holes then add the steel and then put a rock on top, keep going until you have a backdrop.......Plus it gives little fish a place to hide

What the hell is a background do you mean those tubes and cords that hang down behind my tank? No I just painted the glass with latex paintIf I ever need to remove it I will simply empty the tank and bring out the paint thinner

Guys sorry but what is the point of having background? Is it just for show or does it help the fish out? I would think they would be harder to see...
Think of a fish lieka neon tetra

Will it stand out better against a grubby white wall behind the tank, or against solid black? I think black...

Also if you have brown or green algae on your back wall it stands out if there is a pale coloured wall behind the tank, but not if you have a dark background :D

WE HAD LEFT OVER TILE BOARD LEFT OVER FROM RE-MODELING THE BATHROOM, CUT TO SIZE AND PAINTED WITH BLUE ACYRILC, JUST SLID BETWEEN THE FILTER AND TANK AND WALA!!! LOOKS GREAT

Me, i use a penceil, colour penceils, enough paper to cover the back of the tank, a good strong strip of sellotape, and bag, i draw myself on and colour it in to my fancy :p

I managed to get some "mirror on a roll" sticky-backed stuff, which I'm thinking of using, so I second the previous question - Is a mirrored back a good idea?

I thought it would make my tank look extra big with double the amount of fishes.
It's not as reflective as a real mirror (think of a dusty mirror).

Will my fish get stressed thinking they are twice as many as they are or will they try and mate / fight / eat their reflections?

Personally, I think it looks good Red. Maybe it could do with flattening out a bit more though. :D

Shopping today I remembered that some people use wallpaper as background.
Went into B&Q and they have sample rolls on display where you can just HELP YOURSELF to a 4ft length! :hey:

FREE TANK BACKGROUND! I DO SO LOVE A BARGAIN! :hey:

For two months, I used one of those backgrounds with all the plants and rocks printed on it. Then, I switched and started to use a mirror. The mirror helps with alot of things, you can see where all the fish are, you can see the other side of the fish, and you can see yourself to see if your hair is messy. :hey:
