Hey guys,

I will be getting a 90 gallon Discus tank soon (hopefully.) A friend down the hall has just empty out his fish into a bigger tank and may have the 90 up for grabs. If so, I really wanted to try something new. I will be getting some Corydora, maybe a Ram or two, and of course 6 Discus (more room for each, but an okay sized group.) I have read some articles in different aquarium magazines, and I really want to try a large school of Barbs. The reason being, is that i've heard Barbs are real softies in big groups. I would possibly do a group of 10-12 Tiger Barbs, what do you think? It would be interesting to try, but I wouldn't want it to end up in disaster. Anyone had any experiences with a large group of Barbs, or a mix of them with Discus?

not related...but how did you get on with this hurricane?

hope you didnt have to many probs :good:

Hurricane Dean has moved away from Jamaica after lashing the island nation with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour, and gusts of at least 138 miles per hour. This came from an observation in Kingston as Dean swept by to the city's south.

Some locations along the south shore may have experienced even more ferocious winds. The north shore escaped the worst that Dean had to offer but likely experienced hurricane gusts and tropical storm-force sustained winds during the height of the storm.

At 5 p.m. ET, the center of Hurricane Dean was located about 270 miles east of Chetumal, Mexico. It is moving toward the west at about 20 mph. Dean is expected to continue on a westward track throughout the remainder of the day. Maximum sustained winds are near 150 mph with further strengthening likely. In fact, Dean may reach category 5 status before it makes landfall.

The Cayman Islands have felt the greatest impact today but fortunately they have avoided a direct hit. Earlier today, the center of Dean passed about 125 miles to the south of Grand Cayman. Heavy rain, high winds, dangerous surf, and storm surge have all impacted the Caymans today, however, the weather will be improving there dramatically within the next 12 to 18 hours.

Well in advance of the storm, weather conditions are now beginning to deteriorate over the eastern Yucatan peninsula and northern Belize. The center of Hurricane Dean is expected to make landfall very early Tuesday morning as a destructive category 5 storm north of the border between Belize and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and south of Tulum. It is here where a water rise of 8 to 12 feet can be expected with monstrous waves of 25 to 30 feet.

The resorts of Cancun and Cozumel will not feel the full brunt of Hurricane Dean but waves on the order of 18 to 24 feet are expected to crash along the shores resulting in severe beach erosion. Squalls of tropical storm-force winds and heavy rains will rotate in across the resorts tonight and into the early morning hours.

Dean will then cross the Yucatan Peninsula and re-emerge into the Bay of Campeche, in a much weaker state, Tuesday night and make a final landfall somewhere along the mainland Mexican Coast sometime on Wednesday.

Various hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings are in place.

Remember that watches mean that conditions are possible within 36 hours; warnings mean that conditions are expected within 24 hours.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, a tropical wave is bringing disorganized showers a few hundred miles north of the Leeward Islands. There is some potential for slow development with

i wish i had a 90 gallon discus tank..

and thank god the caymans are alright<3 my favorite place in the whole wide world

I wouldn't put tiger barbs with discus no matter what size group really, too attack etc.

Why not go for a shoal of larger tetras?

I will be getting a discus tank of the same size......We decorate the room its going into, starting tomorrow. The order for the tank will be placed the same day. Anyhow, back on topic :good:

I would not advise any group of tiger barbs with discus. Tiger barbs are fast swimmer and boisterous by nature, even in groups. Even though they probibly woulden't attack the discus directly, they would put the discus under un-due stress. Discus do not like boisterous tankmates. I am sure there will be other barbs that would mix with discus though. Would Denisonii or melon barbs be suitable???? Denisonii's are expensive though, and mellon barbs can be hard to find in my area.

Thanks for the replies.

I will consider getting some tetras instead, if any shoaling fish. I was considering the Tiger Barb idea, although I was a little iffy on it. You guess have only backed up my other half :good:

Cayman Islands is doing okay! I actually wasn't on island through the storm and sadly I won't be going back (my Mom and step Dad + half sister will though) I guess i'll have to change my location. My sister and mom came with me to Canada, and my step dad stayed. I talked to him today and all is well. We didn't get hit too bad, and it wasn't direct. Some trees fell down and some of the south side of the island got a little flooded. The district Savannah got pretty badly flooded (RoseK you may know where that is.)

Anyways, all in all the island fared fine. A whole lot better then Jamaica, which has to be under a state of emergency for a month...

i love the caymans... but hate hurricane season!!!!

too bad you left.. i wish i was there now.. with a 90 gallon discus tank..

(my dad was "stalking" the storm reports online lol)

hmmm i might know where that area is.. but... i cant recall at this point.

CAYMANS AND DISCUS ahhh its like a wonderful dream.

I would deffinetly do tetras. I have a 120 discus tank with a couple different species of tetras, and they seem to work. Tiger barbs are usually aggressive and fin nippers.

I have heard they are the complete opposite in big groups, thats why I was wondering what you all thought.

Fishbase says they should be kept between 20-26C, so they may not appreciate the higher temps Discus require. I'd second tetras, but again check the temperature ranges. I have Black Neon Tetras with my Discus and they shoal 95% of the time and look great.

Okay well, again the plan changes.

I may be getting a 66 gallon instead (90 gallon was already sold.) Everything included (filter, stand, hood, heater, etc.) the price comes out to 250 CND

Stocking has also changed, instead it will be:
1 Angelfish
5 Discus
6 Cory (not sure what type yet)

Do you already have the anglefish it seems a bit strange for it to be included in the stocking
...Good luck with your tank.I'll have a look at variety of cories now.

As the cories I have looked up do not like warmer temps maybe there are other alternatives?Saying that I keep 3 albino cories with a temp at 29c no problem.

Mixing Angels and Discus is a recipe for disaster IMO.
