What do you suggest for flea + tick control

I would not advise buying a flea collar or anything to combat fleas in a supermarket.

In my opinion, the best products are:

Program manufactured by Novartis
Advantage manufactured by Bayer
Frontline

Your vet can advise you on how these specifically work, as they work in slightly different ways. So the choice is yours :)

For more information about fleas and their life-cycle, look at this article by Novartis.

I would suggest Advantage. Frontline changed their ingrediants some months back and I heard it wasn't as effective as before.
I would never use Hartz.
One thing I have used is the products produced by Adams. They have them at Petsmart. I've used the shampoos and spray...but not the spot ons or collars. Collars basically kill what around the neck and nothing else.

I also recommend Advantage, seems very effective when I have used it. I don't like flea/tick collars because I've found they aren't as effective and can cause a reaction on the dog's neck. One of my collies (RB pup) developed bad hotspots right around where his flea/tick collar was many years ago, and I haven't used a flea/tick collar ever since then.

For fleas....Advantage for sure!

It's a great product, and I (as well as the clients at my work) have never had a problem with it. :)

In order to purchase Advantage, you must see your vet as local pet stores do not carry the product.

Like everyone else, I would strongly advise against the collars or any flea/tick controllers from a petstore. Best to use a prescription from the vet. They're more expensive but worth it! I use Revolution. Works against fleas, ticks, ear mites as well it prevents and treats heartworm and roundworm. It's a 6 month treatment beginning each June.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. :D

I will definitely bring him into his vet and get him one of the premium brands mentioned.

Only problem is Advantage only treats fleas. Frontline treats fleas and ticks. Also, you need to get your dog tested for heartworm before putting him on Revolution if you decide to do that since it treats heartworm also.

I ended up getting him Frontline. I also had him vaccinated for Lyme disease.

Thanks again for all the advice. :)

Well done :) Frontline is a great Product and I'm sure he'd thank you for it (if he could speak) !
