my external filter is making a hell of a noise when on. what do i need to fix it?

Have you pulled the impeller for a good clean with a Q-Tip cotton swab? Have you cleaned the filter recently? If so, are you sure the air bubbles have been purged from the unit?

no air bubbles and have cleaned the impeller. it is a very old unit

I have no personal experience of the eheim filters I`m afraid, but it does sound like you need either another impeller or a new filter going by other filters I`ve had
