my tank is 9ftx3ftx3ft with a 200gallon sump

i was gonna have tropicals but due to the price of heating 766 gallons so im gonna go cold water

would koi be ok in this

also a few goldfish

id love a sterlet as they suposidly get to 3ft rarely but im guessing thats a definate dream

if not koi what please

What happened to the marine?
Koi can get to 1m long so the tank is to small for them. Goldfish, rudd, roach orfe and tench should all work.

well the pump nor the liner were marine safe so didn't set it up

what about shubunkins

They would work fine. If its going to bi indoors you could keep it at room temp and get really strong filtration and gett a big group of hillstream loaches and wcmm. If you go down the goldfish root i would go for something like
6 goldfish
6 orfe
1 golden tench
and maby a few rudd or roach.

well i have 15 000 lph so alot of flow

and it is indoors

but how long could koi live for before i had to rehome as id quite like to buy small then sell on when they get bigger and then buy young again sort of like a grow out tank

Not long at all they should grown from a few inches to about 1 foot+ in 1 year. I personally think they are to active and will grow to big to fast. for hong kong plecs i would add another 15000lph pump to give you about a 10X turn over. They need fast well oxygenated water.

shubunkins would be fine too.

I have goldfish and shubunkins togehter :) - they get to around the same size too (the shubunkins have smaller bodies but longer tails; where as the goldfish are more stocky with shorter tails).

What about a tank of high quality fancy goldfish?

Have a look into setting up a native tank?
There is quite a few native varietys that you could keep, i remember nmonks telling me not so long ago what was possible, you could crete an amazing set up in there...

Or if you fancy something a little different have a look into the sub tropical varieys of channa, or other sub tropical varietys..

Be carefull with tench, I've caught a couple of 9lb green tench in the past and they were incredibly powerfull. I'd be worried about your glass!!

Ive had a 8lb and know what your on about but golden tench are smaller and i dont think they are as powerful as greens.

How about a shoal of 10+ golden rudd? They were my first fish, still have them a year later. Very hardy and easy to keep. Fascinating to watch when they school, all turning together at the same time just like in wildlife films.Love them!

I think a natural predators set up would be nice but after 5-10 years nost would outgrow the tank. But if you get them small them
a few small eels
5 perch
1 pike
would look nice but like i said they would outgrow the tank after a few years.

if i had your sized tank i would get as many large, different types of fancy goldfish as i could fit in the tank. Fully grown bluuble eyes look great, as do all fancy goldfish and orandas.
blue and golden orf look nice. you could get koi or een a sturgen as long as you know someone with a pond you could put them in if they get too big.

seriously?
your gonna use a 9ft tank for coldwater fish?

if it was me id make it into the most amazing reef setup known to man!! ever!
