USA,
can they live with plecos? My brother decided he wants to get one instead of the lake tang fish because the lfs' dont cary many, and if they do, theyre a lot of money!

so he wants to do jewels, because theyre only $.99 and hes liked them for a while. I dont want just jewels, i do want another cichlid or fish, but not sure which kind. I did want an albino krib, but i highly doubt they would be able to live with eachother.

I wouldn't keep jewels with any other fish, they are nasty and have been known to polish off an entire tank before. When they pair up and breed they will kill anything in site i'm afraid. Great colourful fish, but not for community tanks IMO

jewels are highly aggressive species, especially when breeding. they can be kept with other riverine species, or the more aggressive mbuna, like auratus and chippokae.

I doubt if the kribs would survive the jewels. Jewels are best kept with other cichlids that are big enough to take care of themselves. Also you can only keep one pair (male and female) of jewels in a tank - and that has to be large enough for them to hide from each other some of the time. They will bicker if they're constantly together and not in breeding season. They are stunning fish, very beautiful, but real terrors - believe me, I know from personal experience with them. I have a pair in a large cichlid tank and they have finished off 3 of my cichlids that were quite a bit larger than them.

i wanted shell dwelers, but my brother made me get those, and i dont like it that its going to be juts jewelsa now.

The only cichlid I've found that Jewels don't kill are Auratus. They actually got along quite well. ;)

Edit: Just realized semper wrote the exact same thing

The only things my jewels haven't killed were rocks :| Auratus sound tough :p

Just get one, although it may eventually dominate and take over it's tank when it reaches maturity :)
one of what?

oh, um well its not 20L, and we have 6 of them, waiting for them to pair up so we can move them to one of the 15's and move the 15's into the 20.

but i kinda want to get another type. the fish are so small, 1 inch, its kinda empty looking.

what are other river cichlids they could live with?

They get around six inches, but maybe you could put something with them until they get about two or three inches, then they start breeding, and killing
