Not long after moving to this little island 23 years ago I realised the reputation of being permanently cold and wet was thoroughly undeserved - although I can understand why it exists. Have so far stuck with "why do you need an aircon - its the UK". Except for my car of course - after I sold my first car I vowed never to have another without AC and I never have. But I digress

Early last week I phoned a mate who has an AC company to quote on getting one installed. Understandably he is a bit busy and can't make it until Friday just for a quote. Now our summers do last a bit longer than the one week that many claim, and they have been getting progressively hotter and longer. But I assume he has a lead time and is booked up for a while, so I ordered 2 portables off Amazon - Sorry Rog no profit from me this year. I already have one in the bedroom but its a bit heavy to lug up and down stairs twice a day. New ones are for the living room and fish room office. Office is South facing and in a single storied part of the house. By the time the units arrived (coincidentally just as a thunderstorm hit) the office air temp was 34C and all 3 tanks in here were above 32C.

Living room is now at a much more pleasant 23 (down from 29) and the office is at a tolerable 26. Better put the heater back in the new tank as I like it cooler than the fish do . No regrets even if the heatwave does come to an end at the weekend. It takes the house several months to cool down after an extended warm spell as everything is designed to retain heat.

I am cold weather person too but my wife is not as much so the AC is set at 70F. I prefer 60F or so especially at night. I sleep with the window open a little in the middle of winter. Took my wife a little time to get use to that.

I have two window units...one in the office and one in the bedroom. Also my finished basement is about 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house in hot weather. I have a powerful window fan in the basement. Once night falls, temps drop about 10 degrees outside so I put basement fan on exhaust for about 4 hours (on a timer) , and open a few windows on the main floor. Cooler air comes in the upstairs windows and the whole house cools down.
