I'm just going to write the device off. It did its job. It had so little memory I used it like a phone - an easier to view one. I was working on an article for about an hour, went on here, read some stuff, made a comment, went back to the article, read some news and it began to go haywire. I turned it off, in the usual IT advice way and restarted. It went haywire again so I tried it again and it didn't come on.
I've rewritten the article on what I should have bought in the first place, a decent laptop with some memory and speed.

To use the kaput one, I would need a new mousepad, and it really didn't work well to begin with. A lesson learned for the umpteenth time, cheaping out doesn't always pay off. I've lost no photos and nothing I can't replace. All was regularly backed up.

I got my work in before the end of the week!

So back to my regularly schedule programming - my Pristella fry no longer shun the light, after a week. And today I'll finish my presentation so I can go talk fish in a couple of clubs next week. It'll be a lot of driving, but I'll see some friends, and buy some fish.

I got my animal's Chronic Wasting Disease test results in last night, and he was negative. So, I'm going to be butchering elk today! Soon as I finish my tea, have some breakfast, and get the knives sharpened up, I'll be heading over to the cooler to bring home the quarters and get to work. I always do my own butchering. It's hard work but I enjoy it. And the end results?

We have many plants in pots, (etc. some of them are quite large), they have to be portable though. In the late spring to early autumn, ie. when the risk of frost is past, we move them outside. Conversly, they come back in as frost risk starts to appear. Today was the day this year and we have spent several hours moving the pots back inside the house.

It’s that time of month. All of my filters need to be cleaned. I just finished that job. And I also performed water exchanges on my 60 gallon and 20 gallon tank. Exchanging 20 gallons of water each week in my 60 gallon tank is more time-consuming than I anticipated. I will grab some lunch and head to the gym for several hours. I was out of town for a week so I haven’t been to the gym in quite some time.

Mostly agree but spin drives are not always all that bad. I have two laptops; one retired but still viable with a 1 TB spin drive and another that is a Dell with a spin drive on which I run Linux Mint. Both systems have 2.5 inch drives spinning at 7200 RPM and perform well. Shoot, while my main system, surface and Mac Book use an SSD for the system drive... Actually my main uses a 1 TB M.2 PCIe as the system drive ... the systems that use spin drives really don't suffer. Sure the boot time is a bit longer but once up and running all is fine as to access.

We are going to have to disagree with mechanical drives. Of course if what you do rarely access the disk it doesn't really matter

Speaking of Pc's.. anyone had any experience in reducing GPU thermal throttling? I have an RTX 2080ti with terrible thermal throttling I am aware the 2080s are known to have these problems but I did a complete swap of thermal pads and paste about 4-5 months back only for to it still have thermal throttle issues.
If I can't fix it I'll look into the 40 series as an upgrade

If I can't fix it I'll look into the 40 series as an upgrade

You could try water cooling but i don't think it is worth the cost. The 50x are being released soon so hopefully after they hit the market the 40x (which are being discontinued) will be less expensive. Some designs are just bad and we have to accept that - having said that i know nothing about the rtx 2080 so take what i said with a grain of salt; i know that intel changed the thermal design of the haswell refresh and it sucked rotten egg running 20+ degree warmer than the previous generation - after a while they gave up with the new design and then publically ack it was a bad design (i think they were expecting the chip to run cooler so they could be a bit cheaper on the overall design - something about how the inner chip was bonded to the outer package.

Water cooling is something Ive never attempted even AIO. I did consider an AIO for my CPU but went for a Chonky be quiet cooler instead . Yeah that was the main reason for looking at the 40 series. I just want 1440p 60fps. Had some friends recommend the 4070 Super or Ti which looks good and looks to be budget friendly especially when discontinued. Classic Intel.. Been with AMD since the Ryzen 1000 series and have not looked back since. My 5800X is perfect for what I need.

I don't use NVIDIA video cards but, rather, AMD. Just makes sense as I also use AMD CPU's. Also AMD tends to run cooler. Normal temp for my AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is ~50C but I run the system with the side cover off.

That said I looked up your card and from what I found a running temperature under stress of 83-85C is within specs for this card but those temps WILL affect performance as the clock speeds will be lowered.

Here are a couple of things you could try.
1) If using a lower slot move it up to give more space between the card and power supply to lower the effect of the power supply adding heat to the video card.

2) Add an exhaust case fan between the video card and power supply if there is room. This can even be mounted outside of the case as long as the power wires will reach. This will vent heat from both the GPU and PSU to outside of the case which could possibly lower the GPU temps by up to 15C. As a note, if running a closed case, always add an intake fan in the front of the case if you add an exhaust fan. You always want more intake than exhaust to cause a high pressure within the case to help prevent dust entering. Of course you would also want to filter the intake fans; used clothes drier sheets work wonders as such a filter.

Just saw your last post come in... Even though I do the same thing why do you go with 60 FPS? While, on average, the human eye can see see between 30 and 60 FPS the perceptive difference is supposed to be minor as to 30 or 60 FPS. You MAY want to consider lowering your FPS to in the 40-50 range. This will probably help to lower your GPU temps and you are not likely to notice the difference. As a note the human eye does not really work on FPS but it is close enough for this kind of discussion.

AMD do look like great cards but I've grown up on Nvidia and they just work for me . Perhaps removing the side panel may help. I am in the attic room so summer affects the temperature badly, while I use the PC as an expensive heater in the winter .

I did do a bit of tinkering with MSI afterburner many months back prioritising cooling to temperature which did see a couple of degree difference. The top slot has always been home to my GPUs. Currently on an MSI B550 mobo. My case has a PSU shroud so would that affect temps?

I suppose I could do that. I did have a very old 80mm fan somewhere with a 3-pin connection If I remember correctly. The current setup has 2 intakes 1 CPU fan and 2 exhausts. I would get a pic but it's almost midnight and Im working the early on Sunday . A dust filter is something I could do with getting. My old Corsair case had one and it worked wonders.

60fps has always been a go-to for me. The Games I play for example RDR2, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout, and even the newly expected KCD II, always look and play amazing if a constant 60fps can be achieved. I could do this at 1080p but not at 1440p depending on the game. For older titles that I play such as CSGO (now CS2) I could get 250+ with no issues but now Ive had to reduce to a 150fps cap because of thermal throttling. I did try a 45fps cap on Cyberpunk but it looked horrible even at 1080p, of course the GPU was doing a lot better temp-wise but 1080p on a 1440p monitor doesn't look very pleasing. I think the answer is in front of me really.. the problems I have is due to a dated card and for the things I need from a GPU it can't keep up compared to newer cards. An upgrade to a 40 series is needed. Thanks though for the tips and advice

It's weirdly hot here, too, highs in the mid-high 80s. We're about to choke from the forest fire smoke. Really need a good snow storm to cool things down and put out the fires.

At last some encouraging news . My wife is responding to physical therapy well and her mobility is getting almost to the point of right before September 20th when this thing started . There’s still the possibility of cancer , which seems very likely , but I think she may come home this month . Our lives won’t be like they were before but she will be home and I will become a full time caregiver . I can handle that , I’ve been watching the nurses and CNA’s in the nursing home and have made a mountain of mental notes and observations . There’s a lot of sad cases in that place and it breaks my heart to see old people that rarely , if ever , get visitors and to see the ill health that many of them suffer through . Don’t ever take your health for granted . Take care of yourself . Life can change in an instant . Oh , and one other thought . The people who work in hospitals and nursing homes are not appreciated nearly enough and are not paid anywhere even close to what they are worth . These people should be the most highly prized of any class of workers . The things they do and do cheerfully and willingly are things that many would absolutely refuse to do . These folks are my heroes .

Great news, @Back in the fold . I agree with you about health workers, especially nurses. Generally just amazing people.

I put in about 13 hours carving meat today. Got my whole elk cut up and in the freezer/fridge, except for the back straps, which should only take a few minutes. Big take-away lesson: Bull elk are really, really, really big animals. I might need an ibuprofen night cap tonight.

Tomorrow, I'll get the back straps cut up, have the tenderloin for supper, and grind up a whoooooole bunch of meat. Not sure if I'll make sausage and burger tomorrow; I might just grind the meat, freeze it, and deal with it later. I'll be keeping one of the back straps intact so we can have smoked prime rib for our New Year's feast.
