What are you cooking?

I quite enjoyed some smoked things until I was pregnant with my second child. Instead of craving strange things, I started disliking things I normally enjoyed - tea, eggs, cabbage and anything smoked. Once he was born I could drink tea and eat eggs and cabbage again but my dislike of smoked food stuck. It makes you wonder what being pregnant did to my body chemistry.
I'd never heard of cilantro so I googled it. Another language difference - it's coriander here.

You've just reminded me about a science experiment we did at school - phenylthiocarbamide aka phenylthiourea. I'm one of the few people who can't taste it. The solution tasted like water to me unlike most of my classmates who said it tasted horrible.

Well, I won't invite you to our church Christmas party tonight, @Essjay , as I'll be smoking an elk prime rib over maple wood this afternoon. But it's pot luck, and there will be lots of other dishes to choose from. So nevermind; you are invited after all.

Serve a bit of unsmoked elk and I'll be there - I've never eaten elk, there's not much of it around in the UK :)

You're on. I actually had some very good elk (they call it red deer over there) in Scotland way back in the day. I think the landowners cull the deer, there being no big predators to keep their numbers under control, and sell the meat to restaurants. But yes, we have a deal: If you make it over here tonight, I will serve you some unsmoked elk. I suspect you would enjoy my pot roast...The party starts at five. Too bad the Concorde isn't still flying. I think you could make it.

With the strong winds and lots of flights cancelled I'm not sure I could even get there in time on Concorde :(

Shops round here do sell venison and even ostrich steaks on occasion. But nothing labelled as elk or red deer.

everybody that I know that hunts keep telling me how much better elk is than deer and it must be fantastic because none of them will offer you a single bite of the big animal.
I'm pretty generous with my elk. But postage is prohibitive.

thanks anyway. the elk herds here in Ky have really done well since they were reintroduced. our deer may be in jeopardy in the future because they have detected a few deer with the wasting disease in eastern Ky. it doesn't take a lot to transfer that disease from one to the other, just by rubbing against another one.

Not sure what dinner will be but it will involve a 7 ounce boneless pork chop. I'll either have it whole with cheesed broccoli and scalloped taters or thin sliced with BBQ sauce as an open faced sandwich with some fries. I think the BBQ and fries sounds pretty good. ;)

On the elk topic I've never had but would just about kill for some ground venison! A lady used to live in my apartments and her sons were hunters. She was always more than happy to donate 2-3 pounds of ground venison for chili as long as I gave her some... no brainer there as I made it in 2 gallon batches. I pretty much went 50/50 on venison and beef but, as I like different textures, I didn't use ground beef but stir fry type sliced. Also I like beans in my chili but not just the normal red, kidney, beans. I also add black beans and white, Navy, beans. MAN! I NEED to find another venison source as I don't, myself, hunt.

I've been reading about that elk herd in Kentucky. So cool! The repopulation of elk into the east has been a rare dose of environmental good news. Once in a while we humans actually get together and undo the damage of previous generations. It's nice to see that it can happen.

Chronic Wasting Disease is definitely a big issue out west, for deer and elk both. I always get my deer and elk tested before I feed them to my family, as there is some speculation that the prions which cause the disease could possibly pass to humans, and cooking doesn't destroy it. Spooky stuff. It probably won't wipe out the herd entirely, as some individuals seem resistant to it and will survive. But it definitely is a problem in some of the herds around here.

Man, I wish Sheridan weren't so far away; I'd be happy to donate a couple pounds to the cause.

The smoked elk prime rib was a big hit at the party tonight. :)

I've had elk & moose meat only twice when my grandpa & uncles went hunting way back in the day. Both were very good as I recall, like good roast beef. I don't care for venison even with beef or other fat mixed in. Too "gamey" (gamy?) for me.

Ugh, my husband threw a big spanner into my xmas food plan. He ALWAYS wants Jersey Mike's Italian subs, but I often do a small beef rib roast without too much issue. This year I planned on baked ham & pineapple with roasted potatoes & carrots. We both like it, we've had it before. Today he said he might skip the subs?!?!?! OMG!! It's too late now even though I'm not a super big hoagie fan...Tradition?!?! Food shopping on xmas eve? No, not me! I think heck may have frozen over!

So, has anyone else had trouble finding butternut squash lately? I saw it 1 time at Trader Joes but nowhere else anywhere in a few months. What's the deal?

I would be surprised if your local grocery didn't have butternut squash but then it could be a seasonal thing. Personally I am OK with butternut squash but would take acorn squash any day.

LOL! Want to cure your hubby's holiday menu issues? Next major holiday is Easter. A few days before tell him you are just worn out and not going to do an Easter dinner. Say that Easter dinner is his to do. He will likely stutter and stammer and quail in fear. Stick by your guns and he will probably try. No matter how bad enjoy his effort and compliment. Trust me in that it is quite unlikely that he will ever give you a menu issue again. ;)

LOL! I'm trusting that hubby isn't the best in the kitchen. My above advice would not be a good thing with someone such as myself that is a cooking junkie. ;)

I do the cooking in my house. While I try to accommodate my wife’s food choices, I do not allow last minute changes, especially for holiday meals. Get tough Fishorama. 😉
