What Are My German Blue Rams Doing?

Yes they are male and female. I didnt think it was mating as they was the other way round head to tail

Its a little courtship dance, have a look around, see if they have cleaned a rock, made a ditch somewhere. If not, they may well do soon.

Does this mean im going to have fry? And does this mean the water must be ok as they are happy?

Just gone and looked and tbh I carnt see anything theres a few ditchs but they could of been caused by me, as theres a big pile of rocks that they swim in and out of it could be in there, and all the rocks are clean with no sand on already lol

They are not fighting - if they were they would be displaying their spikes and charging each other - there is no aggression. Looks like the prelude to a courtship if they are male and female - they are checking each other out.

GBR are easy to tell if they are happy - if they are not they loose their colour and you will see a thin black line running the lenght of their body!

When they are ready to spawn you will see both their colours intensify, the female will get a bright pink belly and the egg tubes on both of them will be visible. They will then go around together inspecting places to lay the eggs and both will begin cleaning various sites before they make the final decision to lay. My GBR's chose all different spots - a coulple of times on the same flat rock, a few times on the sheer rock face of my 3d background, and a few times in a pit in the gravel!

My pair do this as well, then one chases the other. If its a big tank, they could have a spot anywhere. And having fry, depends on what other fish are in with them.. they're likely to get munched!

It maybe a while before they spawn, if at all, but that is the kinda ritual they go thru.

If they do spawn, being their first time and them being fairly young, they may eat the eggs or if they become fry, eat those, sometimes it takes a few goes for them to get it right, or they could get it right 1st time around.

Keep up with the normal maintenance regime though.

One w/c every other day. They do keep swimming around together looking at places and there colours are really standing out, more so when the tank lights are off. I will update you if anything happens :good:

I have just noticed the black line down the male body, however he is still brightly coloured, is this anything to worry about? The readings are fine.

- Just checked on them, They are staying behind a big coral ornament until I come in then they scramble to the front, so They might be doing somthing behind there, although I carnt see there, not sure though as there is an airstone right near where they keep going. Also I went and checked on the male, and his black line has gone again :S I think he just done it to make me give them some food! Buggar! lol

They can darken/lighten over time, depending on their mood etc, stop worrying, let them get on it with.
