Hi i have 2 spare tanks a small 2.77gal and a small 5.53gal. I am wondering if a male betta would fit in either of these. Heres some photos.

I can either have this tank side ways to the window or backway so that the back of the tank fadces the window.

Which way is best?

i think a betta would be happy in either of those tanks, does worry me that theres no filter or space for one in those tanks, although some people do daily water changes, bit of a bind though, di

There is space for a small filter as i have a small filter that fits in either of them with no troubles, the only problem is the flow is to fast for a betta. Also which is your favourite betta? could you post a pic of your favourite bettas please so i can decide which i like best and which i can get. thanks for the fast reply.

there are some beautiful bettas around, and its good that you can fit a filter what about a heater though, bettas do like it warm, otherwise i think they are excellent and id get the filter set up as soon as poss, then it will be ready.

this one is jolly nice, di

What do you mean favourite betta? Like tail type? (Veiltail, Crowntail, Halfmoon, Plakat...) Or colors? (Red, blue, multicolour.....) It's all a personal preference. Personally I like white Veiltails, but that's just my opinion.

Okay, or I could help you a bit, and you can make your own desicion based on pictures.

Crowntail: Their fins are supposed to be like that...

Halfmoon: Tails shaped like a half-moon...

Plakat: Short fins, males look a teensy bit like female bettas...

Veiltail: The type you almost always see in pet stores...

i got my first betta today :)

Photo0113.jpg

Nice my friend had 1 like that and i had to rescue it off her.

She got a 1gal tank and all the other stuff needed for fish filter, gravel ect.
She didn't however get a heater and she didn't do any research, she got the tank running and got a fish on the same day. Her first fish was a betta called Logan, it was also her last. When she gave it to me i was cycling my 2ft tank so i put it in the 2.77 gal tank with no heater for a few days till my 2ft was cycled. I got it into my heated 2ft tank on it's own for a while and was planning to get a couple of corys when it got over it's troubles. However when she gave it to me i had to get some finrot and fungal treatment as it had Finrot, Tailrot, Mouthrot, Fungus and possibly other deseases. It was nasty to see and looked nothing like it should. I actually felt like calling animal rescue in for it. It couldn't swim properly it couldn't eat properly i didn't know how she could have let it get to that state. It later died about 2 weeks after me rescuing it as the fungus and rot wasn't getting any better. :rip: Logan.

They are so nice i like halfmoons but i don't see them in my LFS.
So theres alot of choices but it's which ones i can get. I could ask my LFS to order a halfmoon in for me if they will.

Yeah i know i just thought i should share the sad story of Logan.

The smaller of the two tanks is useless for a betta, you could however use it for a great little shrimp tank, or an apple snail.

The 5 gal tank is the best one for a male betta. A good minimum size and much safer for water quality.

Get yourself a basic sponge filter for it, and a heater too.

Since the tank is one of those plastic ones aimed at kids it may be difficult to attach a light to with the lid on like that ( and going without a lid can be risky as bettas do jump!! ) so I'd say it may be better and easier for you to go with silk plants for him, and a lot of them ( bettas like really dense planting and not too much open space ) .

It's a nice little tank and a male would do well in there :good:

Thanks i was going to get a heater for it. If i did use the other tank for shrimp, as thats what i would rather have, would i need (and i stress the word need) a heater because it would be my 4th heated tank if i absolutely need a heater or could i just have it in a warm place of the room at room temp as my bedroom gets really warm and thats where all my tanks are.

If you keep cherry shrimp in the smaller tank then no you do not require a heater at all. They do fine in subtropical and coolwater tanks and have been known to breed at temps of around 15 degrees C . All you need is a little sponge filter ( you can make one, there is a stickied thread in the DIY section ) or one of those really mini canister filters which you will most likely find on Ebay.

It would make a really cool simple setup with lots of easy to grow Java moss, which shrimp really love as they feed on the biofilm and like to pick little bits of food out of it. That tank is also better shape for attaching a clip on light to, and would be fine without a lid as shrimp don't really tend to leap out of the water like fish do.

You will have to top up between water changes due to evaporation if you remove the lid for a light, but just keep a small (new) plastic jug near the tank for that purpose . Easy:good:
