just found the whereabouts of my 5 missing neon tetra's, my HOB filter was making a funny noise, like a churning kind of noise and i thought thats not right then instantly thought thats where the missing fish have gone, yep straight through the tube straight into the impellor, great. made me feel horrible to see smeared fishy flesh :( then i took the basket out that held all the filter media, to my surprise there was a living neon stuck at the bottom, his tail was flicking about i put him in a bowl for a moment with some tank water and he was swimming upside down :/ no less than a minute later he died :( and now my filter isnt working, my spare back up filter which has really annoyed me i cannot use, as it has some stupid Europe plug thing with 2 flat rectangular pins (other one had 2 long cylinder shape pins annd i had a plug adaptor for it. so back to the big old bulcky internal eye soar for me :( not a good day.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I suggest the next filter you buy is much more friendly to smaller fishes. Is your old filter cycled?

all this has kinda ruined my day, i mean it was bad enough that my remaining neons are developing the dreaded white spot and now this, i used the cycled media from my internal and put it in my HOB filter, so now i've gotta find a way to get the ceramic media back into my internal, as when i took it out thinking oh i wont have to use this ever again :) i stupidly broke open the plastic cage part thing that held all the media parts, so now i dont have anything to hold it i will just have to try keeping it loose indside the filter if not then my life/tank is ruined :(

wow that's pretty horrific I use two aqueon whisper filters and I don't even think shrimp can get sucked into it becuase the way they made the suction area laced together with the plastic. I'm very sorry for your loss that's a horrid way to lose fish hope your next filter wont bring you such issues.

If you use a pair of pop socks to put the media in then it won't be loose in you internal till you get sorted properly.

thank you, im feeling a bit more optimistic now :) getting things sorted, got my old internal up and running again and to be fair i dont actually mind it, its dark so it blends in with the black back ground :) and it gives out a better flow and there is no way fish can get in :) all is well now just to clear my tank of ick and i will u the number of my neons :D cant wait
