Weird Eye on Betta (Don't think pop... better photos and video)

1ppm is what you want though right? It's a good number.

Also ammonia makes the ph rise
Oh dear God yeah... *face palms* I PUT IN the right amount... but... uh... *blushes* then had ".25" stuck in my head and was thinking "It needs to be .25 PPM" I'm so pooped from cleaning all day. lol. OOoookay. Well... I did the water change ANYWAY... worse things I could have done... lol... I'll let it all settle then add like one drop and check again. I'd ALSO forgotten that it was about half a gallon... maybe a bit more... lower than it should be. I'd expected to get my KH and GH kit YESTERDAY but nope. And again not today. I've started out using distilled water in this tank and was going to add today the minerals it needed... and do that in the partial amount left that it needed. So now it's about 3/4 gallons higher than it was before. Might need a little tweaking. But I'd rather go slow and use lots of testing chemicals to get a good level. Should have done this this afternoon but I kinda ran out of energy. It won't be in there a full 24 hours before I put in the bacteria... but only off by maybe 3 or 4 hours? 5 tops?

It's ok... Takes a bit getting used to. I had some of the same issues.
And hey, the tank is cleaner now 😉

Just get it back to 1ppm and do the bacteria (if you have any left).
Also, why can't you use your tap water? Is there something wrong with it?

I've always had bad luck with lime scale or some other build up on my tanks. Decided to just go plain this time around and build up.

And the high pH was already in this one (I checked all four things... pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and nitrate.... don't ask why. I just did. lol) The pH was on the high end and all it had in it was food from before (took it out last night and ammonia was 0) and when I tested my distilled water the other night it was 6.8. Was kinda weird.

The one I was referring to though was my other tank my fish lives in. No ammonia or nitrite and maybe .25 ppm nitrate. But still ridiculously high pH.

How high is your PH?

For once I didn't write it down. 7.8 in the new tank.. I didn't do the high pH for the one in the other room. It was at least 8.0... again.... still...
So I think it went to 8 due to the ammonia. 7.8 is on the higher end of pH in softwater but the betta should do fine.

You have them backwards... 7.8 was in the new cycling tank (BEFORE the ammonia) and 8(+?) was in MY fish's tank.

Ohhhh... Hmm, that's weird. You said you mix distilled water with your tap? How do you mix it? Is it a 50/50 mix?
I would test the water you use for water changes to see what the PH is for that and also test the GH and KH

I've recently started doing TAP with Prime in the back bedroom with my original tank. It was hard to tell but the tap water was somewhere between 6.8-7. I put in some catappa leaves maybe... a week ago? A little less, actually. Tuesday. Boiled them first, also added some of the water to the tank. I heard they can make pH go up. In fact that was PARTIALLY why I put them in. The pH was like 6.0 before this. I took 3 out Friday. Took out one more this afternoon. Haven't tested it again since today's water change and just sat down. I will when I get up again. Should have when the dog got me up a few minutes ago. Wasn't thinking.

The pH on the distilled (I'm only doing distilled in the NEW tank thus far) was 6.4. Granted I've been using two different brands and didn't check both. I think what I used tonight was different from last night. Just thought of that. Gah.

Good news? I am at 1 ppm! yes!

Leaves added to a tank, and any sort of biological material like wood will lower the PH, not make it go higher... Things that make PH go up is limestone and other mineral filled rocks and crushed coral.
Also, boiling leaves removes the good affects of the leaves. You don't have to boil, just rinse lightly and put them in.

Great to hear your back at 1ppm ammonia! Keep it up!

Ooookay... a couple people said to boil them first. I'll put in some freshly rinsed ones in both tanks when I get up. Also said it would raise pH... I've lost track of who's suggested what but the one of those two who said about pH was apparently wrong there for SURE and probably both were about the boiling... One of them said the instructions on a different brand SAID to boil them. The other said it killed any parasites. The bottom of my fish's tank has crushed shells for the substrate but it's always been there and it's been really low on the pH spectrum too, so I don't think that's the cause all of a sudden. Those leaves and TAP water are the only two changes. And I don't remember when I started using TAP in it.
Thanks about the ammonia though!

Just looked up tannins on aquariums and said peat moss pellets or moss in the filter can help lower it substantially? Suggest it?

You can rinse the leaves off in a peroxide mix for a few minutes and then rinse it off REALLY well with water.
Boiling them makes them rot faster and it rids of the tannins that help fish.

Yes it does... But don't use peat. Bad for the environment and it can be messy sometimes.

My tap water is weird... I have a PH of 8.1 and a GH if 3 but I keep peacock gudgeons which like softwater and a low PH.

But the GH of water is way more important than the PH. As long as the PH isn't too far out of range and it is always constant, it's fine.

Okay. I'll do that and check the pH in the cycled tank when I get up now. Thanks for all your help. The water was pretty yellow... which I'm not crazy about. I like the crystal clear look. But if it's helpful to the fish... heh. The things you do for love.
