Had a pm from someone today saying one of the links in my sig wasn't working, the urls for the forum used to be something like this

Code:
http://www.fishforums.net/content/Scientific-Section/237401/Best-Practices-Kh-Ph-And-Raising-Them/

now to get to the same topic the url is

Code:
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=237401

I've just had to go through my links in my sig and update them all, dread to think how many links in pinned topics etc now need to be fixed?!

Thought I'd best mention it so anyone else can sort they're links out.

The 2 in my signature seem to work fine and I haven't changed anything in them in ages (2 years at least).

ahh thats what was wrong.. thanks for letting us know :)
hows the migrane by the way?

rubbish! been in and out of the hosp to see an eye specialist the last few days, been a week and a half now which if you suffer from migraines you'll understand is a total nightmare. signed off work for 2 weeks now to rest, said if it's still going at that point to go back to the hosp and they'll run some more tests. bit concerning and annoying and i'm getting quite tetchy now, but i'll live.

The board started fairly recently giving topic names instead of topic numbers. I can only assume it has gone back to numbers.

Strange.

you're quite right i'd forgotten that they started as numbers, they must have changed it and then reverted to the previous system meaning old links that hadn't been updated would now work again but new links won't work.

note to william though - appreciate this may have been an unexpected consequence of an upgrade or whatever but if poss it'd be nice to know if these things are happening so we don't have to wait for a problem to come up to spot it!

It's possible the software upgrade of this past weekend had something to do with it. Like I said, mine have been working for a couple years and still work. Maybe the old way (with numbers) always worked, even when they changed to names but names won't work since if it has changed back. At least the upgrade got rid of the spammers. We haven't had one since it was installed.

yeah i'd noticed the spammers had gone, didn't realise you'd had an upgrade thought you'd probably managed to track them down and block them...... but i don't really understand how all this stuff works tbh so don't have a clue technically how you'd do it!

You are right and I thought it was going to be gone on the next upgrade. I will bring that up in the mods forum. William may have just installed something to stop the spamming for now but I wil check.

Just an update. As I thought, the "update" was just a patch to take care of the spammers. According to William, the actual update is scheduled out by the end of the year. When it is in place, the ST will be gone.

Yes exactly right, it was a patch to fix the spammers not an upgrade to the forum software. If I worded that incorrectly elsewhere then I apologise. I believe the release date for the next version of the software is Q4 08, I had thought it was by the end of Q3 08, but that seems to have been and gone!

I am sorry that I did not make an announcement pre/post the patch being applied, I was not aware that it would disrupt the links. Obviously it has and this is unfortunate as it means that a lot of pinned topics will need to be revised.

no problem William, I figured it was most likely an unexpected side effect. Just a bit annoying for us lot!!
