web sight for buying betas

i don't have paypal....i need a savings account for that, and i need to be at least 18 for a savings account OR my parents have to make one for me, and my parents refuse to make me one. :X

hmmm.....any other ways? i think i may have some containers in one of our cabinets.....*goes and checks*

:EDIT: does it matter if they are see-through or not? and if that doesn't matter, is plastic ok?

i haven't gone all the way through the cabinet yet, but so far i found some old whipped cream containers.

hmm....i found this on ebay: jars

jam jars are not big enough! thats like the little cups in the lfs!

smallest container you can keep a betta in comfortably would be 1/2 gal minimum!!!!!! fry can fit into 1/4 gal critter keepers but i wouldnt suggest it. the thought of people raising bettas in jam jars makes me sick. you cant complain about conditions in the lfs whne you raise a betta in a jam jar.
She's a nazi about those boxes!
hah yeah i never sent mine back but i probably dont want to order from her again.

jars aren't permenant....i'm sure she didn't plan on keeping them forever in the things....

ok julie another question, why is white bad to start off with, casue i foudn this really good deal!!!! really good!!!1 (white male and female siblings for only 6$ no shipping, for now its a bid thing) not telling were cause if i bid i dont want any competition... sorry

im thinking just what the heck its not that much...

because you have to breed several generations to get good whites (wihtout red wash). even then most will get a little red as they age. if the pair is $6, it is no good.

Ummm I think it's kind of unrealistic to raise over 100 betta fry in 1/2 gallon jars. That's a lot of water and a lot of space!!!!

thats another reason for jars....

can you emagine fish stores having entire isles for betta's, just because the cups are small? even though the fish may not like it, they're gonna have to deal with it for a little while, and when they get new, nice BIG homes, they'll love it!

dragon, would you be interested in the containers i pictured? i still haven't found out yet if my sister has the jars still.

Like jac said, it is because of how hard it is to keep the color pure. You won't be able to sell the offspring for nearly as much if they have red wash or other impurities. White is one of the most difficult colors to work with, as any other color in it is looked upon as undesirable. I also agree that if the pair is $6, they aren't of high quality.

Also - another thing, why did you say that I said no red? I said red was a good color to start with, just not in whites.

thellama - Your cross is probably fine, I don't recommend yellows/oranges for beginners for the same reason as I don't recommend white. They're just hard to keep the colors clean through further spawns. If you don't care, go ahead... but why spend the money, when you can get an equally good pair of another color which may be easier to raise?

to thanks i would lose money cause shipping would cost like 2 or more dollors

i dont see what every one is freaking out about 1/2 gal. or jam jars seem fine for the FRY till they are like 3-4 months... :dunno:

because jam jars are cruel. its no different from using cups like the ons at the lfs.

Jac, it all depends on what size the jam jars are, I'm not sure how "jam" jars got brought up specifically, but there are different size ones. Breeders regularly keep their maturing males in smallish containers as it's unreasonable to expect otherwise when you're dealing with 100's of fish. You say anything under 1/2 gallon is totally unacceptable, then you admit to useing 1/4 gallon. I assume you do plenty of water changes and keep the water quality good, so I'm sure your fish are just fine, hopefully others will do the same when using smaller containers. I'd rather have people use small containers but do enough water changes to keep the quality good then to have people use larger containers and think they never have to change the water (or rarely do). Jars ARE different from the cups in stores if they are larger than those cups and the water is changed regularly (the ones in stores are rarely if ever changed).
