Must confess I've been intrigued by this model of powerhead, due to the huge turnover of water and its cheapness (All Pond Solutions on Ebay do them for £30, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WAVE-MAKER-12000L-H-AQUARIUM-MARINE-POWERHEAD-/310177938301?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish), some Hong Kong based sellers have cheaper auctions but some state they come with 3-pin plug adapter and not necessarily the correct UK voltage (which makes me rather wary, especially the agro of maybe sorting out faults/replacements)...

Looking into high turnover powerheads a little, I've come across the Hydor Magnum 8 for just under £90 through a USA Ebay seller (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HYDOR-Magnum-KORALIA-8-PUMP-3250-GPH-/350384337570?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0#shId), which costs more but Hydor have a pretty good reputation for such devices (not to mention it is a single-head design which will concentrate the flow further and they are also rather eco-friendly on the running costs).

My Rio240 inhabitants all come from and thrive in flowing water, which the Eheim 2078 plus Juwel 1000 do to some extent, but I feel I will need something more "beefy" when I can get Nelly's 5x2x2 (~540l) up and running.

Penny for your thoughts, especially if you own products of this or similar nature :)

I have a NeWave 3100 L p/h in my 168g and a Koralia Nano 900 L p/h in my 50g and I think they offer more than enough flow for a tropical set up, alongside a decent filter.
I think 12,000 L p/h is quite excessive for a tropical setup. My powerhead in my big tank buffers along my 5/6" Oscar, and other fish if they get caught in the flow, and there is always more than enough flow around the whole tank.

By all means try it if you want, that one on eBay looks very cheap. What effect are you hoping to achieve? If it's a good current/circulation etc, then I have that in mine, looks like a river flowing on top.

By the way I have NeWave and Koralia and there really is no difference, they are both as good as each other :good:

I'm not so much worried about things in the Rio240 (4x1.3x1.6), its when the riverine fish need to have the 5x2x2 assembled for them, which I imagine will be before Xmas one way or another (we move, I activate it in our garage somehow, or I plead with mother-in-law up the same road with electrified garage to let me keep them there).

As you say, at that price, its probably worth trying a Wave Maker for the heck of it.

Kev and I have 3000L/h fairly cheapy wavemakers (the ones made in Hong Kong and come with adaptor) for all of our self-built plywood tanks and they are brilliant. Never had any problems with them and the water is always moving!

They're perfectly good IMO for creating a current in a tropical tank. In fact, I'm just about to buy some 6000L/h wavemakers for our 8 x 4 x 1.5 tank for the living room - will let you know how far the current gets down the tank before it's barely noticeable LOL!

HAHA, excellent!

Money is tight again at mo (hence I have not been able to follow up your great value 108l tanks or the puffers), with impending rent and bill direct debits, so my better half is helping me out a little to buy a new Blagdon Powersafe 20m supply kit for £93.95 (read "steal") from either Aquacadabra's Ebay store or a price match at my raved about LFS (Aquajardin). I'm finally going to get Nelly's old tank running in the garage this week...

By mid-september, I should then be able finally decide on the Wavemaker 12000 (more likely to at least try one at price of £30) or the Hydor Koralia Magnum 8, plus an All Pond Solutions' 2000EF external filter (and extra media) for ~£100 from their Ebay store!

Execellent !!

I'd love to come round and have a look once it's up and running !!

You would be more than welcome, hamfist ;)

I find it so ironic that I found a way of sorting out a safe electric supply for less than £100, within days of your Texas Cichlid troubles and me offering you the tank to use as a respite for him, after finally visiting Romsey World Of Water (some nice fish, a pleasant young lad giving decent advice to fish buyers, but sadly quite a few tanks containing dead fish).

Romsey World Of Water .... (some nice fish, a pleasant young lad giving decent advice to fish buyers, but sadly quite a few tanks containing dead fish).

A fair assessment. It's bad news there at the weekends. The tanks seem to get ignored a bit due to the nbumber of customers, and a number of dead fish are noticeable.
Used to be a bit more reliable with fish quality. Has a new manager recently, but I'm not sure if that's the whole reason why things have gone downhill a bit.
THey have also had a "partial split" from the WorldofWater homgroup (visit the WoW website and they are not mentioned).
