How long do you wait after doing a water change i.e. 25% before you test your water. I have a Tetra 6 in 1 kit but I'm unsure whether to test as soon as water is changed or not.

Thanks in advance.

Hi dusty2,

I agree with the one hour advice, especially since an hour is about the soonest you'd want to perform another water change if your previous water change had to goal of lowering some amount of ammonia or nitrite(NO2) poison in the water.

Its important to note that paper strip tests (perhaps the 6 in 1 ones you have?) are unfortunately worse than bad, they are misleading and can lead to decisions that can mean you lose your fish. Many of us like and use the API Freshwater Master Test Kit as a really good all-round test kit for beginner situations. Also, note that if you are indeed seeing traces of either ammonia or nitrite(NO2) then you may be in a "fish-in cycling situation" and the fish-in cycling articles in the Beginners Resource Center will be of help.
