Good Morning,

I have a 55gallon tank and do my weekly changes. I have used purified water and distilled water.

My question is I see advertisements for reverse osmosis filters for the home.

Does anyone have any information on what these are like or advise on which one to use?

Does it remove chlorine and chloramine?

I hate adding the water additive to remove chlorine and chloramine cause I know it can build up in the tank.

RO water is pure, use it and you'll have to add mineral powder, why are you worried about dechlorinator build up? It's pretty much useless after a few days as it breaks down.

Hi mate.

My problem has been one of pH in my tank with it being up around 8.0 and I have been unable to reduce it no matter what I tried. I realised the problem was high dissolved solids and general hardness in the water(i am in doncaster) so decided to take the plunge and get an RO machine.

I bought a tmc v2 pure 50gpd system and set it work. It took me around 3 days to achieve a 50/50 mix of tap and ro water for my 91 gallon tank but as I added ro water my pH fell steadily and is now stable at 6.4 (I keep discus fish).

Yes RO machines do remove just about all the nasties from the water including solids, nitrates, ammonia, chlorine and chloramine so there is no further need to purchase water dechlorinators. You will however have to buy a good quality re-mineraliser to add some minerals back to your RO water as fish will not live in pure RO for very long. I use a product call brightwell discus code which is £13 for 250 ml and if used as directed it treats around 8000 litres!! cheaper than many dechlorinators so over the course of time my machine outlay will pay for itself. The colours my fish are displaying now are phenomenal and I am so glad I got a machine.

depending on your tank size ( I think you mentioned 55gal?) a 50gpd unit would be enough for you. I change 50 litres of water daily in my discus tank (91 usgal) and it takes around 7 hours to produce this water. basically when i have finished changing my water I set my RO machine running and by the time I go to bed at night the water is available for the next days water change.

sorry for the long post mate and I hope you have fun!!
