Water Problems

How do I get my 1 year 4 month wiemaraner to swim. She'll go about 3-4 inches deep but that's all she'll go in. Help. I've pushed her in a couple of times. But she won't swim.

Some dogs (my dog for example ) abosolutely hate water and there is really nothing you can do about it. The one thing you should NEVER do is force your dog to go in the water. That will just make her more fearful of it. The best way to get her used to water is to make it a fun thing. Here are some ideas:

1. Toss one of her favorite (waterproof ) toys into the water while you are playing with her. Chances are, she'll forget about her fear and go in after it.

2. Stand in the water yourself and call her to you in an excited voice. (You could try coaxing her with a favorite toy or treat.)


Other than that, I'm afraid to say that if she doesn't like it, she probably never will! BTW- Don't worry about her drowning if she ever happens to fall in deep water... dogs instinctively know how to swim.

I only pushed her in once. The rest of the times she has fell in. But she defintly isn't the smartest dog in the world. She isn't very ladylike also if you know what I mean.
